Well, to be fair he was speaking to superstars of their respective sports, not average salaries. I would suspect that the average NBA player's salary is higher cause of the small roster - compared to the other sports.

The owners make much more than you think, if anything this is just a point of power the are trying to make.
On the superstar note....Stern has a valid point regarding the NFL. Some of the top earners in sports are still NBA players

Of course this list doesn't even include endorsement deals but for arguments sake, I think this article makes a strong point that NBA superstars are highly compensated.

I said superstar, not average player. If you're going to insult me, at least read what I said correctly.

I dunno, I think at the end of the day the 50/50 split will only truly effect non-superstars (as superstars will always make more in endorsements anyhow). The average NBA salary IS way to high though when compared to the rest of sports - which is why I'm totally behind the owners in this regard.

Gee, Rashard changed his number, and shrunk about 6 inches in that picture.

Owners make an investment, and there should be a sense that they could lose money in the deal just like with any investments regular people make. There should also be a sense of a social contract, beyond what they hype up regarding their love of the community. We see too much asked of the citizenry without much of anything required in return, and considering that a good majority of people likely have no particular interest in basketball, it's really out of whack. This current situation sees them looking to ensure huge profits regardless of their own recklessness or business savvy, and there is no consideration for what this lockout means to the communities that support them.

Show me a sense that they are looking to impove the game and even out the playing field among all owners, and I'm all over blaming the players and agents. But instead I see a group of people looking for a bigger chunk and greater privileges and assurances. I've already seen the game diminished from 25 years of marketing the individual stars at the cost of luck becoming the predominant factor for too many teams to build a strong, balanced roster. Of course that has only been amplified by players and agents buying in, but it's the owners that supposedly have the hammer and willingness to do what it takes to shape the rules, and instead of reshaping what exists, they just want a bigger chunk coming their way.
Any enterprise can pick up and move if they want to, even after communities bend over to accomodate them. Once salaries got too high through collective bargaining, GM had to shut that bitch down in some towns and they were all out of luck. Ask a few of them if they would welcome that industry back to their town and if employees would work for 50K instead of 75K.

I think a league is different because it is an asociation of businesses co-operating. And the association should get a bigger chunk because times have changed. And players will still get rich.

MBL and NFL are on different ends of a league salary spectrum. I know which one I subscribe to as a fan. We don't even have to go as far as the NFL, but the individual owners are not going to change it on their own. Neither are the Yankees and Red Sox going to say, "Oh. What have we done?"
Mark my words, Brian Burke would have signed Sheldon Souray and Sean Avery to a 5 mil contracts this year without a hard cap.

It'll have to be a system that forces it. NFL fans get upset also, but the franchises are healthy, everyone's getting rich and the fans love it because they go in knowing they have a fair chance every year. If it wasn't for their system, franchises like Buffalo would already have to pack it in. But they co-operate through their salary structures and to me, everyone wins. (except in one scenario that I won't get into)

If we could be content as fans to sit there and enjoy a good 'ol basketball game without wanting to decapitate someone for losing or having no shot, then maybe owners wouldn't agree to take such big salary risks.

Deal Close On New Mid-Level
Oct 10, 2011 4:45 PM EDT

The NBA and NBPA are close to an agreement on a new, shorter mid-level exception for free agents, according to a source.

Owners have sought a major reduction in the mid-level, which allows teams over the cap to sign free agents.

The two sides spent almost all of their five-plus hours of negotiations on Sunday on system issues, and not the split of Basketball-Related Income that the players will receive in the next CBA.

If the league goes on strike, the good news is the Bengals are 3-2!

no offense my friend but you obviously have no fucking clue how hard a general labourer (assembler) works in GM...it's laughable how you make it sound like this is all they have to do to earn $75 G's
i worked in GM for 31 years...the last 15 years i worked there i witnessed countless people being carried out in stretchers from exhaustion, heart attacks etc etc etc...the workload for the average employee is off the fucking scale
these people EARN their $75 G's !

sorry for the rant but holy fuck !...people need to stick to posting about things they actually know about

ok...carry on

Don't take it that literal! If I say all the mailman does is put a letter in a mailbox for $60G, I hope he doesn't think it is all I mean.
And unfortunately, my take on GM comes from employees. And they may have earned it, but what do you now do if you don't have a job at all? who's paying that? And why not negotiate for tollearable working conditions so that people can still be employed? You have to draw the line somewhere. I've been to some of these areas and it's sad now. If you are now working 80 hours a week @ 15/hr.....or still unemployed?

I guess the way I worded it was wrong. Let me reword it... They will be among the least paid superstars in professional sports after the 50/50 split. Whats really funny is that you have nothing better to do than chirp everything I say, making yourself look like a waste-man more and more each day. 37k posts of chirping, you must have a fun life
