Grizzlies Lionel Hollins not pleased about the trade

Quote:
Memphis coach Lionel Hollins explaining why the Grizzlies traded away five players, including leading scorer Rudy Gay: “When you have champagne taste, you can't be on a beer budget. It's a small market and I understand the economics of being in a small market."

Quote:
“I like my team. We’re 23-10. Why would I want to break up a 23-10 team?”

Then came the none-too-subtle threat.

“If they break up the team and get rid of everybody, I’ll coach them until the season’s over,” he said. “Then I’ll make a decision about what I’m going to do.”

hahhahahaha.... bye Lionel. I'm pretty sure that the Grizz won't have too many problems finding another coach to take your spot.

Damn, son... Thems some fightin' words right there. Glad to have Rudy and glad to see him all mad that he lost him.

It's pretty messed up that the owners in Memphis are more concerned about cutting salary down and getting rid of key cogs before the new luxury tax restrictions come into effect next year, they could have very well waited until the end of the season.

He doesn't deserve to be laughed at. He took over that team when they were shit and turned them into one of the best defensive teams in the league. The Grizzlies winning % has gone up every year he has coached them. The players really respect him. He took no shit from Iverson and managed to get Randolph to calm down. Hollins navigated some tricky situations and came out ahead.

Grizz might not have trouble finding another coach to take his spot, but will they find as good a coach? Especially when they are cheap?

On the flip side, Lionel Hollins will not have too many problems finding a job if he leaves.

Who says they're blowing everything up?

It's a bit of an overreaction too IMO. It's not like they dealt Rudy for picks and worthless expirings. They got a nice young big in Davis who's ready to contribute and is having a great season.... and they got Prince, a guy who's got championship experience and has always been known as a solid defender who can step right in at the SF spot. Bayless steps in off the bench and take up some of the lost scoring load.... not sure why he's so irate TBH.

He basically said "IF" they trade everyone. Obviously if he leaves it will mean that they're basically rebuilding.

Ah. Missed that. In that case I withdraw the statement.

PG - Conley
SG - Allen
SF - Prince
PF - Zach
C - Marc

Off the bench: Bayless, Davis, Arthur, Wroten

That's far from bad. Younger, yes but there was no guarantee that they'd winning the West anyway with Gay and Speights.

I agree with everything Hollins said.
There is a time and place for cost saving measures and it is not in a middle of a playoff home-court push

I would love to see him here. At the same time they traded the guy they could most afford to trade. They still have the defense in place, and might have needed the added depth more than Gay.

This isn't just about Memphis either. This is about the league. A league whose owners see the value of their teams continue to balloon, while insisting on a CBA that will mean trades to shed cash rather than get better.

I have to wonder what would have been available to them after the season is done though. Calderon wouldn't be there. And Gay's contract hardly made it easy to make anything work. Even this deal was difficult enough, but a lot of that was probably involving milking the most out of the deal for themselves. I only wish we could have seen a pick coming this way.

Maybe Memphis should have traded Randolph.
