So, it was immediately clear Tuesday night that LeBron James was quite comfortable with his feet planted squarely on the ground in this, his favorite city, and the King barely had to break a sweat as the Cleveland Cavaliers romped past New York 119-101 in James' first game at the Garden since he dropped 50 on the Knicks late last season.

This, however, was the first time that James had entered the building with the locals having legitimate reason to believe their future savior was setting foot in his future home. The game came four nights after the Knicks made two major trades that set the course for the future direction of their franchise, clearing $27 million of salary cap room for 2010-11 when they traded away Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford.

Even Spike Lee, that noted Knicks superfan, was a LeBron James guy Tuesday night.

And when New York guard Nate Robinson saw the producer had turned traitor and was wearing a pair of the special red "Big Apple" sneakers James was debuting for this game, he immediately began stepping on Lee's foot.

"Stop!" Lee said. "He's going to be your teammate."

That's what Knicks fans hope, anyway.

ames disagreed that leaving Cleveland is a necessary step to making him a bigger star and giving him a better chance to win championships.

"That's something that's not a factor," James said. "You look at someone like Tim Duncan for instance, who decided to sign short-term deals and decide to take pay cuts to stay in San Antonio to sign guys like Manu [Ginobili] and sign guys like Tony Parker and they won championships. And San Antonio we all know is not a big market at all.

"So for me it's all about winning. It's not about the market that you'd be in, it's all about winning with me and that's what this league has always been about."

So would he take less in Cleveland to help the Cavs bring in another superstar?

"I didn't say that," James joked. "I like the talent part, bringing the talent in, but I didn't say I was taking less."

"You have to stay open-minded if you're a Knicks fan," James said before delivering his parting words. "If you guys want to sleep right now and don't wake up until July 1, 2010, then go ahead. It's going to be a big day."

I really hope he stays in Cleveland. If anything, just to spite the Knicks.

I think it's a tad ridiculous for him to be showing all of these lame NY "hints". the shoes, the Yankee hats. come on. If i'm a Cavs fan, i'm down right furious.

If Lebron doesn't go to the Knicks, he'll be going to Europe - but he's leaving Cleveland - that's for sure. The NBA needs strong franchises in LA, New York and Chicago.

Amare = nets? Their front court is gonna get better with Yi and Lopez. If anything, they'll be going after a 2 and 3 (I'm sure they'll trade Carter at some point)

Cleveland has no chance at re-signing him IMO.
he's all about the limelight, theres no way he goes anywhere but NY.

It was kind of embarrassing last night. Chumming up with the fans, the debut of the new kicks, joking around with Jay-Z (Brooklyn?). Dude, just relax and then go to NY when it's time. You don't have to make a fool out of yourself and your organization.

No question. I mean, you can tell by his body language that he's outta Cleveland in 2 years. I mean, he's recruiting CC Sabathia to be a Yankee.

it was a slap in cleveland's face really.
he's a media/spotlight whore.
his ego isnt big snough for cleveland to possibly hang onto. its like what Tmac said after he bolted for Orlando - he knew from day one (draft day) that he was gone at first chance.
Lebron knew he was going to NY 5 years ago.

agreed.
he'll do the math. europe will offer multi millions, but the money he'll rake in from endorsements will be greater.
and being at the center of it all (NYC) it'll be even more than he could imagine.
he feeds off this hype...

It's true. and since you mention organization, you gotta wonder what some of the higher ups in Cleveland are thinking...

This may sound extreme, but i can see Lebron getting traded next season.

Lebron will be a Laker before he will be a Knick. If he wants to be seen as King James for Real he will have to win a ring. Right how he is just Prince James with no jumpshot or post moves. Bron is the best player in the open court and at finishing at the rim but thats where they best in the league talk stops. He needs to become a complete PLayer like KObe before hes legitimately crowned King James. If he wants to win a RING he will go to Lakers, Spurs, Detroit, or Suns. If he wants to go back to square one and continue to put up big numbers but loose year after year he will go to Knicks or NEw Jerz. For now let him grow and find his game and then speculate in 2010.

LA belongs to Kobe. NYC has 24 million people and LA has 16. Remember that the Knicks dont have a problem with going over the cap, they will bring in talent to accompaney LeBron, like Bosh or Amare.

you're forgetting that Kobe is also a free agent in 2010.
LA's wallet will be tied up re-signing Kobe. they wont have enough for James.

I think he should go to Portland. You'll get more money winning 8 championships and having marketing partners like Roy/Oden, and being an international superduperstar from those titles, than playing in NY. Plus Portland loves basketball, he'd own that town.
