Cavs LeBron James says he doesn't 'respect' Jerry Colangelo's threats for 2012 Olympics

Quote:
Last week, James said he was likely going to skip the FIBA World Championships this summer in Turkey because of other business interests. One is free agency but the other, and more likely reason, is James is scheduled to film his first feature film.

Colangelo revived USA Basketball when he took over in 2005 by demanding three-summer commitments from players to build team chemistry leading into China. He plans on doing the same this time around but James -- and reportedly fellow captain Dwyane Wade among others -- appear set to challenge that edict.

"There are no free passes to London," Colangelo told Yahoo! Sports shortly after James made his statements on Wednesday.

"There are no special rules for anyone. If someone decides to pass [the World Championships] without a legit issue, they do it with an understanding of the risk."

James was clearly upset by the statements and reacted strongly on Sunday.

"There's a lot that goes on with being a professional athlete other than just basketball," he said. "I think everyone in the USA knows what type of commitment these guys have made, including myself, since 2003. I'm not trying to bash Jerry or anything like that because he's a good guy and I respect him. [But] I don't respect that [statement] because of the commitment we've all given to the USA."

James has said he would like to defend the gold medal in 2012. He has also played for Team USA in four of the last six summers -- including two Olympics, one World Championship and one FIBA Americas Championship.

Colangelo is not just working the program, he's trying to set up the Americans to win the World Championships, which they haven't since 1998. But it doesn't sound like James is planning on backing down.

"We'll have to see when it happens," James said. "If we're jeopardizing being in London, what can we do?"

If he doesn't want to play for his country so be it. North American sports obviously don't share the soccer mentality when it comes to international play. Colangelo trying to change that stigma but I suppose it will be rather difficult to change it. Personally if I were a Lebron fan I'd rather him not play ball in the offseason. The NBA schedule is as compact as it is he could use a little less wear on his body.

Dumb and shortsighted for either of these guys to posture like this. Now they have backed each other into a corner.

USA basketball is back!!!!

Both positions make sense. What doesn't make sense is trying to cram international competitions in alongside the schedule of the NBA. The NBA schedule is already too demanding. One thing or the other has to give. If the NBA really wants to sell itself through international competition then they need to make the regular season demands more sensible.

Team USA has seen that half-assed commitments aren't enough, but the NBA has seen that full commitments are too much in that it hurts the teams involved more often than not.

+1 at he fact of Colangelo trying to change the stigma for international play and pride level.

-1 at Lebron resting. LOL Unless he is on the Raptors or in the West he should get as little rest as possible. LOL

Bosh doesn't do feature film unfortunately only independent art films with Spike Lee.

This is what ruins sports, Shaq, Iverson, Artest rapping, Shaq, Penny, Acting.

Only good NBA actor is Ray Allen to date.

Lebron is going to make a fool of himself money hungry *beep*.

dumb moves by both parties...
for colangelo and james to use the media to get their points accross and argue to each other wasnt smart.
niether of them will back down now that its in the spotlight and their pride will just escalate things.
Colangelo will use national pride as his weapon and Lebron will get defensive being 'told' what he can and cant do... this is a recipe for disaster for team USA because precedence will be set with this one act.
