It's wrong to use this word this way... Like an insult. Already saw few people in forums, who was offended, cause they have mentally retarded children, friends, brothers...
No class, but hey, it's LeBron.

no, i didn't say that. but i do think its ok to say something is retarded but its wrong to say someone is retarded. by calling a person retarded you have the intent of being offensive. whereas people say stupid shit all the time so i see nothing wrong with lebron calling a question he felt was retarded.
Personally i think the word is fine to use. As long as your not reffering to a person with physical/mental disabilities. That is wrong.

But if your talking about something crazy stupid. Then yeah, its cool to say he is retarded or that was retarded. People are sometimes to sensitive to words.

if you're talking about something stupid, why don't you just say stupid, instead of transferring the insult of stupidity to people with disabilities who absolutely don't deserve that insult? the word isn't the issue, the transference of the insult is.

beacuse of the emphasis of the word same goes with calling people a f****ts...
thats all there is to it, it's not anything new. People have to wither stop being so sensitive or ignore it completely since stopping the use of the word will never happen

i think it is pretty obvious that 'offensive' word use tends to decline when people stand up and make their collective voices heard. no one expects it to stop completely, just that it is seen for what it actually is and not passed off as not a problem.

if no one objected to words like nigger, kike, faggot, etc, we'd still see them all the time like we used to when they were commonplace. but we don't because collectively we see the power and the impact that words like that have.

also, most people just don't see the point in further marginalizing the vulnerable. our language is rich enough that we have plenty of other options.

firstly i call bullshit because you have clearly heard that word before in reference to people with disabilities unless you live in some sort of vacuum, without any human contact.

but that aside, your opinion is likely because you, personally, have nothing at stake in this. we are a collective, not a bunch of individuals that have no impact on one another.

if i told you that i don't associate nigger with black people and that it just means lazy person to me, would it be ok for me to use that word publicly? would it change things if i was a famous athlete?

I post a long response hours ago, but it looks I deleted it accidentally.
Ok, here we go, short as possible. MT (Mental retardation) is the name of generalized disorder, it's not an insult. If you use it like the synonym of stupid/moron, you insulting people who actually has MR. You got it ALL WRONG. I even thought you were sarcastic, cause this comment was just THAT BAD.

good point.
Maybe i will think twice about using it in the future. But to further my own arguement.
The word "retarded" had a meaning long before it was used to reference disabled people.
The word "niger" did not have any other meaning but to insult and put one race below another.

Straight from Wikipedia, and i am assuming many other dictionarys.

Retardation is the act or result of delaying; the extent to which anything is retarded or delayed; that which retards or delays. In particular, it can mean:

I wonder if he word used, by a very intelligent person, in the same context would be considered offensive.

If I were to understand that an objection motion could be retarded, or, slowed down or held back by an external force or a limiting factor, then I would in fact be using the word properly. If I apply that word to a question that is being presented with a clearly ignorant or uninformed bank of preparation or information than again, I see the word as being used properly. The only real insult then, is the insult on the reporters basketball IQ or their preparation, which is arguable depending upon the question.

And THAT is what people are doing when the use the word. Yes it has been used to describe mentally challenged people, people called the mentally retarded, or slow. It wasn't mean't as an insult initially as they really just didn't have another way to say it.

How it can be looked at now, people use words callously all the time. Often it's offensive as they are comparing their intellect to that of a mentally challenged person. We don't like that in our society. We choose to try our hardest to make sure we adhere to strict codes as to make everyone happy. It's not a bad thing.... not always at least.

I think people can be more thoughtful in how they say things, but then again, I also think people who hold the "retard" dilemma close to their hearts could cut a bit of slack here and there too by not flying off the handle immediately all the time. There are grey area's on this one.

the thing is, sj, that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not necessarily slow or stupid. the math genius that benzo posted a few weeks ago, for example, technically has an intellectual disability. i don't think anyone here thinks he is stupid or slow. some people with disabilities are stupid, as are some people without disabilities. the two are most certainly not synonyms.

and i don't think, for a second, that either lebron in this situation, or your average slang user of the term, intends it to mean slow. they intend it to men stupid, thereby equating the stupidity with the disability and transferring the implied insult from one to the other. that is the part i find objectionable, especially considering the richness of our language and the other possible word choices.

the other piece that is connected to this is the history of that word in a clinical sense. it is loaded with stigma, and that stigma, especially when used as a label, has pigeon holed people in institutional settings and social arrangements that have excluded them from participation in 'normal' society. continuing to use that word to mean stupid reinforces the weight of that label and the corresponding social exclusion.

this is an extremely important factor in the lives of many people. we can certainly do a lot better than that.

apologies if our collective ability to move past his topic has been retarded by my over-abundance of words. the reasoning is still valid, though.
