Pacers Larry Bird wins executive of the year

Quote:
Indiana Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird is the recipient of the 2011-12 NBA Executive of the Year award, the NBA announced Wednesday. Bird totaled 88 points and received 12 first-place votes from a panel of his fellow team executives throughout the NBA.

Bird is the only person to win all three awards – MVP, Coach and Executive of the Year. Red Auerbach, Frank Layden and Pat Riley are the only people to earn both Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year honors.

As President of Basketball Operations, Bird oversaw a Pacers team that went 42-24 (.636), earning the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference and finishing with the league’s fifth-best record.

“This is an honor for the Indiana Pacers, not an award for Larry Bird,” said Bird. “Everyone in this franchise put in a lot of work and showed a lot of patience as we have tried to get this team to a level on and off the court the fans in Indiana can be proud of. You always believe, and hope, the players you get will fit into a plan and I’m very proud of what our guys and our coaches have accomplished so far this year.”

The San Antonio Spurs’ R.C. Buford finished second with 56 points (eight first-place votes) votes and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Neil Olshey finished third with 55 points (six first-place votes). Executives were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote.

I would've given it to the Spurs GM, but Bird made some nice transactions as well.

I loved his comments on TNT last night - talking about how he'd like to have a couple of superstars, but ultimately he prefers having a team.

This was the year the Pacers made a big breakthrough in the standings, so they gave it to him now. However, it's more of a 3 or 4 year award. He got the Pacers to this position by being patient, letting contracts expire, and drafting/trading well. That took more than one year.

Clippers GM should have won it IMO. Acquiring Paul/Billups/Kenyon Martin/Reggie Evans/Nick Young is better than what any other GM has done this season.

I agree. However, as I mentioned above, I think Bird's done a great job over the past 3 seasons building up to this breakthrough season for the Pacers. I think some of the knowledgeable voters might have taken that in account. Bird deserves recognition for his past work; this was the opportunity to give it to him.

I think that's what makes this award so hard. Do you reward a guy like Olshey who went all in this summer and turned that team around, a guy like Bird who has spend 3-4 years building a team, or a guy like Buford who has continually found diamonds in the late draft and free agent graveyard?

The fact the Spurs haven't had a top 20 pick in a decade or big FA signings and yet win 50+ every year is amazing.

Plus rumor has it that he's stepping down after the season.

I'd be very surprised with the way they're allowing his top assistant to interview around.

From 6 weeks ago:

Larry Bird leaving the Pacers?

Quote:
Larry Bird’s head-faking, bed-unmaking, Dwight Howard imitating stretch as Pacers president is coming to a conclusion at season’s end regardless of how the 26-18 team finishes, maintains someone very much in the know. “He has definitely decided not to return,” the source asserted.

A handshake promise was given Simon last summer by Bird that he would consider re-upping for another season, but that has been ruled out. It’s believed Simon is aware of such and has a petite list of prospective replacement candidates.

The firm belief by those with a pulse on the situation: Simon is more apt to choose a marquee name like Reggie Miller or Chris Mullin as opposed to promoting the people on site, general manager David Moray or personnel director Kevin Pritchard.

I am sure the past couple years have been taken into account (drafting Paul George, trading for Hibbert), but my point is that it shouldn't. Executive of the year should have nothing to do with past seasons and that's why I think the Clippers' GM should have won this award. If Coach of the year is based on a single year, then why not this award? NBA needs to keep it consistent.

Letting him go? What if he wants to go? Apparently, his healt isn't the greatest and he wants to just retire.
