Larry Bird leaving the Pacers?

Quote:

Larry Bird’s head-faking, bed-unmaking, Dwight Howard imitating stretch as Pacers president is coming to a conclusion at season’s end regardless of how the 26-18 team finishes, maintains someone very much in the know. “He has definitely decided not to return,” the source asserted.

A handshake promise was given Simon last summer by Bird that he would consider re-upping for another season, but that has been ruled out. It’s believed Simon is aware of such and has a petite list of prospective replacement candidates.

The firm belief by those with a pulse on the situation: Simon is more apt to choose a marquee name like Reggie Miller or Chris Mullin as opposed to promoting the people on site, general manager David Moray or personnel director Kevin Pritchard.

We need to replace BC with Larry Legend.

And LOL at giving the job to Mullin or Miller over Pritchard. Indiana is so fucked if they do that. Yeah lets get a big name to maybe sell more tickets now that theyre involved in the organization instead of hiring someone with experience who knows what the hell theyre doing, and someone who did a fantastic job in Portland.

This is what i was hoping. If bc fucks up this summer then larry, if he hasnt taken another job till then, would be a great replacement. Actually so.would pritchard

Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but Larry's probably not taking another job as GM (let alone one with us), it's very likely he'll retire.

Yeah, like Bird has been such a great GM. Better than McHale, mind you, but really nothing to be excited about. Thanks, but no thanks.

I agree. He's better than Jordan too but he hasn't done much.

I think only his name excites you..
if I ever feel to get rid of BC, I will just remind myself of the job Babcock did while he was running the show

As an executive, (head of basketball operations/GM/whatever), Bird has been involved in some very good moves.

When Bird tookover, Zeke was fired and the Pacers hired Rick Carlisle. They immediately became an elite team, increased their win total by 13, and won 60+ games.

The "Mallice and the Palace" killed that team and set back the organization several years. They had tainted assests. Any GM would have had trouble getting value in trades.

Bird showed a lot of patience when the Pacers decided to rebuild around 2007-2008. They had some long term contracts with little flexibility. Now they have some decent young players, cap flexibility, and are primed to land a top 6 seed, at least, for this year's playoffs. The future is bright for Indiana, and Bird got them there.

Oh, and people, myself included, are going to need to cut McHale some slack. He sucked because he REALLY botched the Garnett deal. He should have traded him to the Bulls for Deng and the pick that landed Aldridge. However, McHale raped the 2008 draft. He flipped Mayo for K-Love, and then drafted Pekovic. Kahn and Babcock should be sucking off McHale for giving them that frontcourt.

I could be mistaken, but I thought I read this story has already been refuted with Bird saying no decision has been made? Don't recall where I read that to find the source though.

Blazers missing a crop of dudes, and Bird did have some really good games against Portland.

Diamond Scorpion 03-27-2012 09:33 PM

Definitely argee with you Bill. Bird did wonders for Indiana's organization. He move a lot of bad contracts/bad players out of town and eventually got the young pieces he has today that make Indiana a pretty good team in the East. :thumb:
