Lakers Sign Kobe Bryant to Contract Extension

Quote:

The Lakers announced in a stunning move Sunday that they've signed Kobe Bryant to a two-year contract extension. The deal comes as a surprise as it went unreported by any outlet prior to the official announcement.

Bryant, 35, continues his recovery from surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon suffered last spring, and had spoken of a resistance to take a paycut. The Buss family had made several public statements over the last few months that they intended to ensure Bryant retired as a Laker, and this extension obstensibly accomplishes that.

It's a pretty amazing leap of faith for the organization to extend a 35-year-old player who has yet to return to the court from one of the most devastating injuries in the sport without seeing him play a single game. But it does wonders for their goodwill with the fanbase and gives them security entering this summer's piovotal free agency period. They don't have to worry about convincing Bryant to return and add a star, now they can just pitch the top names while having Bryant inked on paper.

ESPN reports the deal is for nearly $50 million, with $23.5 in 2014-2015 and $25 million in 2015-2016.

I guess at this point you need to pay 50 mil for his name, more than anything else.

What a selfish prick. They'll have next to 0% chance for him to get his 6th ring with him eating up all that cap.

TORaptor4Ever 11-25-2013 01:27 PM

Pau's (+ pick) getting dealt for Melo at the deadline.

Just waiting to hear this'll happen.

How can they afford both Melo and Kobe and still have ten other respectable players?

By exceeding the cap and paying into the tax.

regardless. The right thing to do, the team player thing to do, would be to take the hit like Duncan or KG for the betterment of the team.

Nites 11-25-2013 01:49 PM

I think he signed for big money just so he could be #1 on the all time career earnings.

#1: Kobe Bryant – $327.5 million
#2: Kevin Garnett – $327.4 million
#3: Shaquille O'Neal – $292.2 million
#4: Tim Duncan – $234.7 million
#5: Dirk Nowitzki – $204 million
#6: Joe Johnson – $198.6 million
#7: Jason Kidd – $193.8 million
#8: Ray Allen – $181 million
#9: Chris Webber – $178 million
#10: Paul Pierce – $169.5 million

When has Kobe ever been a "team" guy? He's been out for himself from Day 1 and it will continue as such until he retires. He clearly has his sights set on passing Jordan on the all-time scoring list.

What a selfish piece of shit he is man. I didn't think I could hate this guy any more than I already did, but I do.

LX 11-25-2013 02:43 PM

I love how dumb this is. They could be on their way to becoming the Knicks.

Ataf 11-25-2013 02:44 PM

LOOL all these people "WOOOW KOBE YOU SHOULDA TOOK 580K INSTEAD OF 25 MIL" Oh stfu all and everysingle one of you. Sorry if he REALIZES that taking WAY less money is a stupid decision in LIFE. Yea, believe it or not, money is important. More so then basketball. Nd if you get get max money and play ball, two things I'm sure he loves, he'll do so. Sure Timmy nd KG did take less, but why does that matter? How does two other superstars decisions, who are not even nearly as accomplished in and outside of basketball as Kobe, matter? Good on them they choose to have a less glamorous lifestyle for a possibility for a ring which will make no difference outside of the basketball world. Thank God he ignores idiot fan's and media opinions and does what's best for him and his family. And good on Lakers, without him they're about 100X less watchable. All is see is a max player getting max money and fans bitching that he didn't drop 50 million... as if they would.

Why is the "@KobeBryant" not aligned straight with the picture...that isn't a stamp is it?

Ataf 11-25-2013 02:50 PM

^ no kobe's tweet pics usually have those

creative1mm 11-25-2013 03:23 PM

A Good sign,
they gave him the contract.. he did not force them or put a gun to their heads.. so I don't know where all this selfishness talk comes from, they won 5 Rings with this dude and has been on team since he was 18.. that is why he got the contract.. Kobe is still a top 5 player in this league.. he is proven.. Lakers won't win a title, but as long as number 24 is playing their will be ratings and show time in Laker Land

Lakers haven't had a solid 10 man rotation since Shaq came to town! :cookie:

Don't know who that is, but please do try to make an argument how taking max is worse for his family and himself.
