And he's already fucking the owner's daughter. Can't say I blame him for asking for all that since he had all the leverage, but I can also understand why the Lakers chose not to go with Phil.

Man, this sucks.

Phil Jackson Stunned By Lakers Decision To Hire DAntoni - RealGM Wiretap

Quote:
Phil Jackson was 'stunned' by the Los Angeles Lakers' sudden decision to hire Mike D'Antoni.

Jackson had been under the impression that the job would be his to accept or turn down, but no formal offer had been made.

Sources said that the Lakers ultimately believed that D'Antoni was a better fit for its current roster, especially Dwight Howard and Steve Nash.

Lakers spokesman John Black said team owner Jerry Buss, executive vice president Jim Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak were "unanimous that D'Antoni was the best coach for the team at this time."

Jackson and the Lakers had never spoken about a salary, the source said, "but he knew coaches don't make what he used to make anymore."

Reports indicated that Jackson sought more input over basketball decisions and possibly an ownership stake.

i like this move. i don't see kobe, howard, gasol or ron-ron having any issues figuring out how to play d, so d'antoni's biggest problem is mitigated immediately by the talent of the starters. and nash has already thrived in d'antoni ball. if they can go up-tempo and execute they're going to be impossible to stop. the only issue will be kobe letting nash run the offense.

They need to bring in a true defensive specialist as an assistant. Nate McMillan (rumoured to be brought in) won't cut it.

yeah, i suppose so. it's hard to believe that bickerstaff, eddie jordan and mcmillan can't put that together, though. especially given the talent.

Yeah you're right.

Can't even see how the Lakers will look anytime soon though. D'Antoni and Nash are both injured lol.

And Eddie Jordan is good as gone. No use for him now since the Lakers scrapped the princeton.

No issues figuring out how to play D? Maybe. But checking speedier teams in transition has to be a major challenge, and I'm thinking upping the tempo might not be the best way to address that.

1 - Re: Defensive stats

Defensive Rating is the best stat, because it equalizes for pace by looking at points given up per 100 possessions. That's the stat Clutch used, and it's the one I always use when ranking teams. At the end of the day, it's the only stat I care about when talking about Raptor defensive. The other stats just highlight ways you can improve your defensive rating. The other stats are not the end point; they are the way to get to your objective: give up fewer points per 100 possessions.

So, Stephen A. is wrong and, as Clutch pointed out, Dantoni's teams were about 13-17.

2- Re: winning a championship

The 2007 Suns probably should have won. They had the Spurs by the balls before Horry body-checked Nash at the sideline, causing Amare to get off the bench and come on the court and get suspended. Amare was in beast mode that year. His suspension completely shifted the momentum in that series. That was also the Suns best defensive year under Dantoni. They were gonna win the title if they got passed the Spurs.

3 - Sort of along the lines of what 'trane is getting at, I would ask a rhetorical question: has Dantoni every coached a team with this much defensive potential around Nash in the starting lineup? Kobe, Ron-ron "my mind is gone", and Howard are all very respectable defenders.

4 - The bench could still be a problem. I will be interested to see what minor adjustments to the lineup they might try to pull-off. Time to pick-up Raja Bell!

Also, Hannah Storm looks pretty good for 50. Her ass has a lengthy expiry date.

I don't want the team to be too dependent on Nash though. He's 38, coming off a shin injury, and is only good for about 32 minutes per game. This isn't 2006.

I hope the Lakers continue to underachieve, although it's unlikely. Lakers blow and so do their fans.

They should pick up Kenyon Martin, he'd fit their bench pretty well and knows how to foul hard if you need it.

Shouldn't be a concern with Kobe in the mix. L.A. shouldn't have to ride Nash the way that they rode him in PHX because guys like Kobe and Pau can create their own offense... and D12 has a post game (meagre as it is).

I think D'Antoni kind of sucks. As far as coaching - I really look at the way coaches communicate with officials; and D'Antoni is as good as any at belittling and disrespecting the officials, often for the wrong reasons and usually because his team is stinking the joint up.

IMO D'Antoni was carried by MVP Nash. I'm not sure Nash can carry that weight anymore.

He also sucked for the Knicks until Lin decided to run his own offense. Woodson has been immensely better for the Knicks then D'Antoni.
