Coach better have a strong personality and great track record, or Kobe's going to ultimately be the coach of that team.

It's official, championships are overrated anyway

Mike D'Antoni agrees to four-year deal to coach Los Angeles Lakers, agent says - ESPN Los Angeles

Quote:
The Los Angeles Lakers, in a wholly unexpected move, agreed to terms late Sunday night with former Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni to replace the fired Mike Brown, D'Antoni's agent, Warren LeGarie, confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com.

According to LeGarie, D'Antoni's deal is for four years.

Sources confirmed a Los Angeles Times report that D'Antoni quickly agreed to coach the Lakers after L.A.'s weekend of negotiations to bring back Phil Jackson broke down.

It had been widely anticipated that the Lakers would be bringing back Jackson after deciding to oust Brown just five games into the regular season, but sources said that the Lakers ultimately couldn't stomach Jackson's contract demands to return, which were believed to include a salary ranging from $10 to 15 million annually, significant say in personnel decisions as well as his eventual replacement along with the ability for the 67-year-old to skip selected road games.

Sources indicate that the deal was consummated very quickly late Sunday night towards the end of the Lakers win over Sacramento.

D'Antoni, who had knee surgery at the beginning of November, hasn't yet been cleared to travel, according to sources and "it'll be a couple of days before he comes in, but he's further along than people believe."

Pretty weak but they need to get the most out of Nash so its understandable. They need to win the title this year or its a fail.

To be perfectly honest D'Antoni got a bit of a shaft in NYK.

He has a good relationship with both Nash and Kobe and loves the P & R which will benefit both D12 and Pau.

Phil would have been ideal but this isn't a bad option IMO. As long as everyone stays healthy they should be fine.

If he can help to bring back "Showtime" everyone will be on his nuts in no time.

I hope you're right dude, but we don't have the shooters for his system.

No - he was stunned when told of their decision.

Hilarious. The biggest problem is defense. Bring in the moustache!

They just handed the team over to the players, and they ain't exactly the most manageable bunch.

they still need a shooter at the 3 (get Rick Fox out of retirement ). there bench will prevent them from winning a championship this year.

honestly. they can make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs with the current acting HC. Don't think D'Antoni turns them into a championship team now.

You might disagree with Steph A Smith, but he's speaking facts here. D'antoni can't win championships, you need some actual defense. Has he really never had a top 20 defensive team in his whole coaching career? Never liked him as a coach, I really don't think having Nash and Howard, and shunning Kobe and Gasol - making them 3rd or 4th options- will work out. But we'll see.
Edit: Yes, I do think D'antoni would do that to Kobe and Gasol, just because I have lack of faith in his knowledge to the game. He better not treat Kobe the way he treated Melo. Better let Kobe get into ISOs/post-ups, or you gunna be the next one to get the stare (And rightfully so).

D'Antoni will work their starting lineup even more than they already are being worked.

Is that on D'Antoni though? Or that on the GM?

Alvin Gentry ran his classic "7 sec offense" and the Suns came within a Ron Artest rebound of taking the Lakers to 7 games in the WC finals a few years ago. That team was VERY good.... but it was because Steve Kerr was actually smart enough to bring in some good pieces. Guys who could shoot AND play D.

That's false. D'Antoni's teams were around 13th-17th (not good...but not as bad as ppl think) in defense in those PHX years with Nash/Amar'e/Marion. And that was with Amar'e as center (we all know Amar'e can't play a lick of D). Don't know where SAS gets his stats from sometimes.
