Lakers Lakers cap holds

Wondering if danh or another one of you smart guys can answer this:

I was looking at the lakers cap situation and noticed that Karl Malone, Horace grant, john salley, theo Ratliff, Ira newble, Ron Harper, shammond Williams, mitch Richmond, joe smith and jim Jackson all have cap holds for the coming off season, despite none of them being on the roster. Is this just because the lakers have been capped out for years and never had reason (until now) to renounce their rights? They didn't pay those guys in the 2013-14 season, did they?

WTF? I don't begin to say I know a whole lot about most of the CBA and the cap rules, but how long can you have cap holds? Might seem like a dumb question to some but those players haven't been on the LAL in what seems like eons.

ShamSports.com: Los Angeles Lakers salary information

They can renounce them so it's not a big deal. I'm just wondering why they are still there.

"The key thing to remember is that you don't actually PAY cap holds; they're just charged to your cap space to plug a loophole, and thus are integral to calculating cap space. "

Yes, I understand what a cap hold is. I am asking why they still exist despite the player not being paid or being on the roster in 2013-14.

If I'm not mistaking capholds stay for years if the team is over salary cap. So unless, those players sign with another team, retire (officially) or are waived, they have capholds. That didn't happen with neither of those guys (I think) that's why you still see them. And I think that these are just capholds not actual salaries
But yea they shouldn't have any problems to renounce them.

Again I'm not 100% sure about this stuff

This page explains the Lakers cap hold situation in a lot of detail.

theScore - How does Kobe's extension affect Lakers cap space?
