Kris Humphries @ 9Mil/yr?

I realize it would only be one year, but....

The Nets are waiting to see what happens with their pursuit of Dwight Howard before signing free agents.

They missed out on an opportunity to sign Nene, who agreed to remain with the Nuggets on Tuesday for $65 million.

The Nets are likely to sign Kris Humphries to a one-year contract worth up to $9 million, according to sources.

Good to see the lockout actually brought about some changes.
NBA it's FANtastic.

In the previous CBA, Kwame and Humphries might have gotten the same amounts, but for 3 or 4 years. Flexibility is the new language when it comes to fringe talent.

They'll overpay on a 1yr deal. Then they'll go after who they really want. This is why the escalated luxury tax shouldn't take two years to get going. At least we don't see ridiculous 10-15yr contracts in the NBA like in other leagues. If that ever happens, the NBA's fucked!

Hump's value has increased dramatically since he divorced Kim Kardashian.

:D

that's true, but it does seem a little discouraging that the same problems seem to exist in that fringe players are still being overpaid (even if it's for a smaller timeframe) and superstar players are still bullying their way out of towns. with the exception of some subtle differences the new NBA seems a lot like the old NBA and that's not a good thing.

True. But that's what collective bargaining in good faith gets you - limited change.

isn't there a salary floor now? thats why some of these players are getting big one year deals.

Yeah there is. This is what you get with that.

TORaptor4Ever 12-14-2011 11:11 AM

I don't mind teams paying guys a little more as long as the deals are 1 or 2 years.

Yeah $9M is a bit steep for a guy like Hump but you have to figure that he's going to remain motivated to play and if he's not.... well, you cut his ass at the end of the season or trade him at the deadline.

85% of cap.

I heard it got dropped to 80% for the first year of the deal.

Now see, that's a pre-divorce contract. If he was still hitched, with Kim sitting courtside, it creates a helluva distraction for opposing teams. Therefore, it'd be a strategic investment, not so much for talent.

Claudius 12-14-2011 09:17 PM

Truth be told, yeah 9 is high for him, but he had a good year last year (was a walking double double and played decent defence). It finally clicked for him and I could see a team thinking there's more room for growth.

Superjudge 12-15-2011 08:47 AM

Good for Hump.
