Kobe May Opt Out

I can't see it happening, but it would make for an interesting summer if Kobe opted out too.

The club's long term outlook as a perennial title contender will affect his decision, according to sources that spoke with the Los Angeles Times.

The report from the Los Angeles Times indicated that a maximum 'extension' would be for five years and $135 million, but that is inaccurate.

If Bryant opts out of his contract, he will be eligible to sign a six-year contract for approximately $169 million. Because Bryant has more than 10 years of service, he can sign for 105% of his 08-09 salary of over $21.26 million, which would put him over $22.325 million in 09-10. He can then have 10.5% in raises each season after the first season.

If the Lakers signed Bryant to a full max deal, he would make $31.7 million in 13-14 and just over $34 million in 14-15.

Should Bryant elect to sign with another club, that team could pay him $128.6 million over five years with $29.1 million in 13-14.

I think he'll probably opt out. If he's really concerned about contending, he'll take less money then the ridiculous amounts mentioned in the article. If not, he can watch his team repeat 2004- 2007 all over again. His decision will be telling.

He will be stupid if he opts out this year. If he does the Lakers will not have any money to sign either Lamar or Ariza. This wil set them up for a long summer and probably the Lakers would become shit LOL. NOt too bad but worse then this year

c'mon gurkie, you should know this by now. we talk about it almost every day...

Quote:
Larry Bird exception
Perhaps the most well-known of the NBA's salary cap exceptions, it is so named because the Boston Celtics were the first team permitted to exceed the salary cap to re-sign one of their own players (in that case, Larry Bird). Free agents who qualify for this exception are called "qualifying veteran free agents" or "Bird Free Agents" in the CBA, and this exception falls under the auspices of the Veteran Free Agent exception. In a nutshell, the Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent. This means a player can obtain "Bird rights" by playing under three one-year contracts, a single contract of at least three years, or any combination thereof. It also means that when a player is traded, his Bird rights are traded with him, and his new team can use the Bird exception to re-sign him. Bird-exception contracts can be up to six years in length.

Both Kobe and Lebron should go to the Clips.

i don't see this happening. he already said he's doesn't see himself playing in a different jersey. that means we can make a run for Ariza? (if they don't have the cap to sign him that is)

ariza will add a ring to our roster something everyone on the team is lacking. that's what we need someone with a ring or someone with good experience of going deep in the playoffs(steve nash)

Didn't one reporter at press conference ask Kobe if he'll opt out and Kobe said no? I say it on TSN
