Lakers Kobe: "I have very little cartilage under my right knee cap,itís almost bone on bone"

Quote:
Which brings us to the crux of my inquiry. How did Kobe propose to pull that off, a Lakers’ legionnaire wondered, “when he hasn’t practiced the whole season (something no member of LA’s press has called him out on)?”

Is that true, I asked Kobe?

“Yeah.”

Why?

“Because I have very little cartilage under my right knee cap, it’s almost bone on bone.”

Bryant has undergone three operations on that same knee, one this past offseason, after having it drained several times during last year’s playoffs.

“Until I got it drained the first time during the opening round against the Thunder I could not bend that knee at all,” he revealed. “It was swollen as hell and it hurt like hell. Luckily things got a lot better once I had the procedure.”

Kobe is 32. This is his 15th season. Including the regular season, the after-party and All-Star Games, he has played a total of 46,660 minutes.

Bound to happen sooner or later. He'll blame his decline on his knees rather than father time, even though, I guess, they kind of go hand in hand.

I thought that when cartilage was an issue, surgeons implant something in its place. No?

This is terrible news for the nba first brandon roy and now kobe. Hopefully kobe can still be a superstar for a few years i really want to see him break the all time scoring record

He won't break the all time scoring record imo. I said that even before this news.

NBA would be wise to fund biotech research to use stems cells to grow/replace cartilage. It will be a reality eventually.

Micro-fracture
dun-dunt, dunt, dunt, dunt..
Micro-Fracture

They can fix him, he'll miss a year though

Brandon Roy's situation is a different part of the knee. I heard they're trying to put some dramatic surgery together to fix Brandon. Like giving him the meniscus out of a cadaver....EEEEWWWWWW!

Not my area of expertise but I know that there is a procedure called chondrocyte implantation where surgeons remove a patient's chondrocytes (cartilage-producing cells), grow the cells in a petri dish, and re-implant the cells with the hope that the cells will produce cartilage. I believe the procedure is being performed in the States right now and is also undergoing some fine-tuning to increase its efficacy.
