Lakers Kobe: "I don't take charges".

Quote:
"We got a couple guys that take charges, but for the most part, the one guy that took a charge is now playing in Oklahoma," Bryant said after practice Tuesday, referring to Derek Fisher. "I don't take charges. Metta [World Peace] don't take charges. Steve [Blake] will take a charge every now and then, but most everybody else just stands up and plays."

The 33-year-old veteran who is playing in his 16th season said part of the reason for his longevity is his aversion to sacrificing his body to draw offensive fouls.

"I learned from my predecessors," Bryant said. "[Scottie] Pippen had a [messed] up back taking charges. [Larry] Bird had a [messed] up back taking charges. I said, 'I'm not taking charges.' I figured that ... out at an early age."

Bryant said that Pippen and Bird didn't share their charge-taking horror stories with him to influence his decision, he merely noticed through observation. He also picked up on other legends who benefited from not taking charges.

"I've seen Michael [Jordan] not take one ... charge and he's healthy his whole career and the same thing with Magic [Johnson]," Bryant said. "I might not be the smartest guy in the room, but I can figure that ... out."

Hmmmmm..... I guess you could call it smart on his part but this is just one more thing that piles on to the whole "Kobe cares more about his legacy than winning" thing. Looking to others to do the dirty work while he collects the glory.

You don't think so eh? Going into games with the mentality "I'm just not gonna take charges." =/= a guy who's willing to do whatever it takes for his team to win.

I'm guessing this is also for the other legends who didn't want to take a charge as well haha.

I mean, I agree you should do anything you can to get a W for your team, but by no means is this anything you should attack Kobe's will to win.

That doesn't mean that his motivation is protecting the legacy. The motivation can be "I love playing basketball and making cash, and want to do it as long as possible".

You can want longevity without being focussed on your legacy.

I'm not sure I believe Kobe - he's to super-competitive to be concerned about longevity.

It's just not...natural for players to put themselves in a vulnerable position. It's something you simply don't do if their are no referees/officials on the court - so in that sense taking a charge is similar to flopping.

How many championships does he have? More than anyone else in the league?

Questioning his will to win? LOL

Not quite sure how back gets injured in taking charges? You are supposed to be standing face on...

Pipen and Bird spent considerable time playing against other forwards. Force in the paint that is what gets you.

if kobe was concerned about his legacy, he wouldn't have sat out the final game of the season.

as for taking charges, for every charge that gets called, you're either picking up a foul yourself or laying on the ground while the play continues. the odds have never been in the favour of the defender.

You land on your back after taking one.

You also need strength from your back to embrace such a hit standing up.

Lol trane that was a good Zinger haha.

But in all serious, I hate Kobe but this is just dumb, charges virtually never go your way, and without Kobe (if he got hurt from it) that team is dead.

end of discussion.

people will try and twist anything he says to make him look bad. besides, more than half the time players flop to get the charge call. kobe is a whiner when it comes to the refs but he sure as hell ain't a flopper.
