Default Kobe Bryant battles mom in court battle

Quote:
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant is in a court battle to try to keep his mother from auctioning off mementoes from his high school days in Pennsylvania and his early years with the Los Angeles Lakers.
A New jersey auction house filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Camden on Thursday for the right to sell the stuff after the NBA star's lawyers wrote the firm telling it to cancel a planned June auction.
The disagreement is a high-value, high-profile version of a question many families face: Can Mom get rid of the stuff a grown child left at home?
In this case, the 900 mementoes happen to be worth upward of $1.5 million.
Among the first 100 or so items Pamela Bryant intends to sell: the NBA star's jerseys, practice gear and sweatsuits from Lower Merion High School; varsity letters; a trophy for being the outstanding player at the 1995 Adidas ABCD basketball camp; and a signed basketball from the 2000 NBA championship game.
And then there are rings, for the 1996 Pennsylvania high school championship, a pair that the Lakers made for Bryant's parents for the 2000 NBA championship and one from the 1998 NBA All-Star game.
According to court filings, Pamela Bryant struck a deal in January with Goldin Auctions in Berlin, N.J., which earlier this year sold a rare Honus Wagner baseball card for a record $2.1 million.
She got $450,000 up front, which she intended to use for a new home in Nevada.
In its court filings, Goldin says Pamela Bryant told the auction house that she asked her son five years ago what he wanted to do with the items that were in her home.
''Kobe Bryant indicated to Pamela Bryant that the items belonged to her and that he had no interest in them,'' the auction house's attorneys wrote. So she put them in a $1,500-per-month New jersey storage unit.
The challenge came Tuesday when Goldin sent a news release announcing the auction. By day's end, Kobe Bryant's lawyer had sent a cease-and-desist letter telling the auction house to call off the sale and return the items to him.
Kenneth Goldin, owner of the auction house, says he can't cancel the auction because he's already advanced $450,000 to Bryant's mother and put money into advertising the auction.
Kobe Bryant's lawyer Mark Campbell said in a statement, ''Mr. Bryant's personal property has ended up in the possession of someone who does not lawfully own it. We look forward to resolving this legal matter through the legal system.''
Bryant has had a sometimes icy relationship with his mother and father, Joe ''Jellybean'' Bryant, a former pro basketball player who is now coaching in Thailand.

The most shocking this from this whole article is the fact that she was paying $1,500/month for storage in NJ.......was she renting a 2 bedroom condo and putting everything in there cause thats just stupid amounts of money on a storage space...esepcially for what jerseys and basketballs.....

I'm completely guessing here, but I would think that some of the cost of the storage space might relate to the level of security. The items she stored might not take up that much space, but those jerseys and basketballs are/were worth a lot of money. If I was her, I would pick a storage place that went to extra lengths to make sure that shit didn't get stolen.

he apparently offered to give her 250k for her house, she refused and asked for 450k. Then she put his stuff to auction.

He has enough money to buy back all "his" stuff. I would never cite my mom for everything involving money if i have enough left for me to live a decent life.

just my 2 cents

I love how everyone who watch rich people "W/E BUY IT BACK, THROW UR MONEY EVERYWHERE"... it's clear why you aren't rich and if you were, you'd be more like AI. Kobe has gave and gave to his mom, selling your childhood stuff and your NBA champ ring is a little too far. If you won a ring, and someone tried to sell it and all your stuff you gave value, you're telling me you aren't suing? Kobe said it best through his tweet.

But didn't Kobe's mom ask him to pick up his stuff from the house 5 years ago? He didn't do so and she spent a ton of money keeping it in a storage room. It's his fault.

lol kobe's fault? I know this is speculations, and no one knows what's really going on but ... Just cause your son doesn't clean up and take his stuff back doesn't make it yours to sell. Kobe worked hard for his rings, you don't just start selling it without giving him a warning or even letting him know.

And she's not broke cause Kobe does give her a lot of money, probably money for the storage too. He's givin them millions. And she's married to a basketball player too. So money wasn't the issue. The AMOUNT of extra millions was the issue.

Kobe's parents haven't been the most supportive parents throughout Kobe's life, I'm not totally surprised by her actions. Pretty sure there was a few years where Kobe's parents would NOT speak with him because he married Vanessa. Kobe's mom could have been jealous (I think it's fair to say) of Vanessa and Vanessa's mom in particular. Kobe has bought the supportive Vanessa's family two mansions both well over a million dollars, but refused to give another million dollar mansion/house to his mom. His reasoning was because he's already gave them millions+ through out the years, he wanted to draw a line in the sand. Then her mom decided if he wasn't gunna buy me stuff- which I don't really NEED-, i'll just sell his stuff so I can buy the house. It had nothing to do with 'OH THIS STORAGE WHICH KOBE PAYS FOR IS SOOO MUCH OF AN ISSUE- HE GIVES ME MILLIONS BUT 1,500 A MONTH TOO MUCH FO ME" no matter how much and how long they kept it, Kobe prolly paid for it by giving them millions through out the years.

BTW Kobe HAS bought his family houses and cars for years, he just decided that it was getting too out of hand.

Yea some people get 30 million one year, and guess what... THEY DON'T WANNA WASTE IT ALL. He's bought his mom plenty of cars and houses and other things. Well into millions+ and also bought his parents in-law millions on houses and other things. I think Kobe was being responsible, his mom not so much. Throwing your money around buying his parents so many houses and cars, and in-laws, and others - gotta realize, stop spoiling them... They're taking too much. Also guess what, the extra money just doesn't sit there... Kobe buys and invests in things too... He has his own family.

His mom got spoiled and got upset she couldn't buy ANOTHER million+ dollar mansion. So she trys to sell the guy's valuables who's been providing her houses and cars for years out of spite, it was immature of her and ungrateful.
