Rockets, Knicks, Wizards Discussing Three-Way Deal

Quote:
Feb 10, 2010 11:02 AM EST
The Houston Rockets are in the discussion stages of a complicated, three-team trade that would send Tracy McGrady to the New York Knicks, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The centerpieces of the trade would include the Washington Wizards shipping forward Caron Butler and center Brendan Haywood to the Rockets.

The Knicks would send the expiring contract of Al Harrington to the Wizards.

In order for the deal to work, additional pieces would have to be added.

Complicated indeed.

Houston needs to make a move. They're sliding quickly and they need a guy to shoulder the scoring load away from Brooks. Haywood doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'd think Portland would try to make a move for Haywood, but meh.

And Al Harrington is becoming the new Chris Gatling.

Why is this in the Raptors section? Should be in the NBA section.

And really, all it is is talk.. at this point, it's just talk. Just like how JHoward was supposed to come to Toronto. That was all talk.

And why is this uh oh?

Why would the wizards make that move? They get nothing out of it.

Yup. True. They get one year less of Caron.. for cap space.
They'd probably have to take on a lot of NY's garbage, which doesn't make sense on their part.

Houston is easily emerging as the winner in this scenario...
Caron and Haywood? wow.

sure they'd lose out on the 2010 sweepstakes, but unless you are sure to get bosh/wad/lebron, maybe JJ/amare - then this is a no brainer. huge move.

Okay, people might rip me up for this, but perhaps this is how the deal could get finalized:

To Houston:

Butler ($9.7 mill)
Haywood ($6 mill - expiring)
Jeffries ($6.8 mill - one year left)
Milicic ($7.5 mill - expiring)

To Washington:

Harrington ($10 mill expiring)
Brian Cook ($3.5 mill expiring)
Brent Barry ($2 mill expiring)
Conditional 1st rounder from Houston
2nd round pick from New York (maybe two 2nd rounders, since NY gets McGrady's birds rights).

To New York:
McGrady ($23 mill - expiring)
Stevenson ($3.8 mill -
1 year left but cheaper than Jeffries next year. Creates $2.7 mill 2010 cap space.)

All the teams get something.

Houston gets
-Haywood for a push at the playoffs this season.
-Butler for a push this season, and for help next season.

Washington gets
- Financial relief this season to help deal with the luxury tax. When you're over the tax, shedding a few million from payroll actually saves over $5 million for ownership.
-Ditching Stevenson helps, from a basketball and financial perspective.
- picks. Even if not lottos, they are still good to have.

New York gets
- A bit of extra cap space next season.
- Birds rights on McGrady, which might help if they acquire a big name FA via a sign and trade. Or, Mcgrady could be an insurance policy to appease fans after NY loses out on FAs next year.

Wow if the Rockets would get Jeffries too they'd be frigging deep!

I don't think that's a plausible scenario, I would think the Rockets have to chip in some more than T-Mac's huge contract and the 1st alone. besides an NBA analist lol.

Lowry, Anderson, more picks, not sure.
I mean Haywood Butler and Jeffries that's half a playoff team right there. Also exactly what the Rockets need. I bet no high seed would want to face them in the 1st round!

The whole notion of the 3 team deal is problematic, I'm just trying to find a way it could work.

1 - Jeffries is NOT worth the $6.8 million he is paid. Have you watched him play? Part of what Houston is "chipping" in is taking Jeffries salary.

For almost $7 million, Jeffries provides this:

28 minutes per game
.444 FG%
5.5 PPG
4.4 RPG
1 block

His contract sucks. Houston is hurt by it, and thus "chipping in" to the trade. They don't even have minutes for him. They'll have Haywood, Scola, Landry, Hayes, all playing ahead of him. Houston takes a hit by accepting the contract.

2 - Yes, Barry is an analyst. His contract is still on Houston's books, though. He's not meant to play. It's an expiring that ensures the salaries work while still allowing the Wiz to shed salary over the next 2 seasons.

3 - Haywood, Butler, Jeffries is NOT half a playoff team. Plus, Haywood is an FA next year and there is no guarantee he resigns with Houston. The Rockets are basically renting him with the possibility of resigning him via the birds rights that may serve useful. No guarantee, though.

4 - Switch Lowry and send him to the Wiz instead of Barry...maybe that makes it more even. But Houston is NOT going to offer more picks when they have no guarantee that Haywood resigns. The first rounder is for Butler.

5 - Washington would be willing to part with Haywood to help ditch Stevenson, whose contract is a pain in the ass for a rebuilding team.

This is about financial and basketball considerations.

Washington is saving millions, not just on the cap, but even moreso in reality, since the luxury tax forces you to pay DOUBLE on each dollar that you're over the threshold.

Yeah I know you're just puzzling, not attacking you or your post or anything.

I have seen Jeffries play I think he is very useful. He defends everything from point guards to centers I think that's pretty outrageous. I mean they put him on Brandon Jennings, maybe the smallest quickest player in the league!

maybe he's overpaid but his contract isn't long it's not really a big deal imo.

No, no, I know you're not attacking. I even said that Lowry could be switched for Barry. I just think Houston takes a hit with Jeffries' salary, and that's why they wouldn't give up another pick.

Yeah, but only if a deal makes sense. You make it sound like he guaranteed a major move. He may still make a deal or not. You also say "so BC's talk was just talk?"...why, because this Houston/Washington/NY deal may or may not happen? And this rumoured Butler deal wass his only option and that's that? Are that impatient, or just naive?
