Knicks Knicks like to waive G Marbury

NEW YORK (TICKER) —The New York Knicks may waive Stephon Marbury within the next few days, according to a published report.

New coach Mike D’Antoni and team president Donnie Walsh got together to discuss Marbury’s future Saturday, and all indications are that the former All-Star is on his way out of the Big Apple.

Citing sources, The New York Post reported Sunday that D’Antoni wants Marbury waived, but Walsh doesn’t want to take any action until he has the chance to speak with the enigmatic guard.

“I’d like to get into it and find out as soon as possible,” Walsh told the Post on Saturday. “It’s not fair to anybody really. (We have) to find out where can this go, and then we can make a decision.”

Marbury was placed on the inactive list prior to the Knicks’ 116-87 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.

In New York’s 120-115 season-opening win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday, Marbury dressed but sat on the end of the bench for the entirety of the game. He traveled with the team to Philadelphia, but sat in street clothes.

Marbury, who has butted heads with teammates and coaches since joining his hometown team in the middle of the 2003-04 season, will earn $21.9 million this season - the last year on his contract.

He reportedly does not want to negotiate a buyout and has said that he will not take one penny less than the sum of his deal.

After a productive preseason, D’Antoni - and presumably Walsh - have decided to keep Marbury out of the rotation, allowing the team’s brass to assess the progress of the younger players on the roster.

Nonetheless, there remains the chance that Marbury could be in uniform for Sunday’s home game against Milwaukee because Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry have sore knees.

If Marbury is waived, he will likely clear in two days and be able to sign with another team for the veteran’s minimum of $1.2 million. The Post reported that Denver and Miami have expressed interest.

In his 13th season, the 31-year-old Marbury has averaged 19.7 and 7.8 assists in his career with four teams.

“The way it should work out, it will work out,” Walsh said. “I’m not sure what that is right now. It’s hard on Stephon Marbury. Let me put it that way. I think he’s dealt with it very well.”
Says Marbury doesn't want a buyout because he wants his money.
If they do buyout, veteran minimum on him ftw?

Cancer, insists on being starter.
Loves to dominate the ball, infact needs to in order to be effective.

Total opposite of what TO's offense is built on.

Well Solomon is gonna do the same and if that's the case, better have a more talented player doing the same thing. And consider this, 19 pts and 7 ast as starter. Former all-star, he's a vet now he'll understand wouldn't he? Have him as the focal point of the 2nd unit.
Won't make him a starter but better than what Knicks are doing with him. If he does spread the cancer, then waive him. Vets minimum.
I don't see how this cancer is going to be bad if half the forum wants Stephen Jackson on the team.

Also, what I don't get is isn't Marbury perfect for D'antoni's offense?
Why doesn't he just use him..

I'd sign him in a heartbeat to anchor the second unit.

But if they waive him, his 21M salary will still be tagged on him.
If they buy-out, then call up Bryan and tell him.
We can then send Roko to develop in the D-league? And for the price of 1M-

Not team in their right mind will claim him off waivers.

After he clears them he's free to sign wherever he wants and the Knicks are on the hook for his 21.9 million.

If they buyout, they still take the salary but Marbury can sign for vet minimum?

The same scenario will probably present itself regardless of if he's waived or bought out. He's said he doesn't want a penny less than he's owed for this season, so my assumption is they'll just waive him, since he's unwilling to negotiate a buyout for a less.

Once he's waived teams have 48 hours to claim him. If they do, they acquire his contract and are responsible for his salary. It's highly unlikely anyone will claim him and assume his 21.9 million dollar salary and even if they wanted to for some unknown reason they'd have to have the cap room to do it.

After 48 hours he's "cleared waivers" he can sign with the team of his choice.

So after the 48 hours, will his 21.9 still be tagged with him for the team who signs him?
Say Raps sign him after 48 hours. Will Raps be charged with 21.9 or will Raps be able to negotiate a contract?

No, the Knicks still have to pay him the 21.9 and it's still counts against their cap.

I think I stated this a month ago. Steph would be a great fit for us on the second unit. We'd finally be allowed to bring Roko along at a slower pace, which is what the majority of us wanted anyways.

This talk of him being a "cancer" is funny though. Also, he insists to be the starter in NY, where there's not much of a difference between him and Duhon. Here, I think the role would be well defined espescially with Calderon.
