Default Knicks Aren't Relevant

Quote:
"Right now, the Knicks are not relevant," said a prominent player agent with a few high-profile clients in the free agent class of 2010. "Only the media in New York keeps them relevant. The Knicks are trying to do the right thing but they've got a long way to go."
Quote:
"We thought this could be a tough year," Walsh said. "But we've always made it clear that our plan is to get under the cap for 2010."

Personally I don't think they're going to be able to catch Toronto or Philly with 2010's crop of free agents. I say this because I fully believe James and Wade will sign with their current clubs and if Bosh goes it will be via a S&T and the new team won't be in their division. Beyond the big three there are big names but not all those guys will jump ship either.

The Celtics will fall off in the next couple years and jersey will be still in rebuild mode.

The Celtics will fall off but at least they have a really good starting PG and a solid young starting C once the big 3 do retire. They have something to build with. What does NY have? A couple good young unproven players, but thats just it, unproven. If they dont get Wade or Lebron next offseason, theyre fucked unless Chandler/Gallinari/their PF draft pick develop into PLAYERS and all of a sudden theres a rush of plaeyrs that want to play in NY.

Or at least get JJ or Amare if you cant get one of the biggest boys.

IMO opinion, Rondo and Perkins would be franchise players on a bottom dweller team.

I do agree with what you're saying about the Knicks. They are gambling a lot. If all the big names resign or sign somewhere else, their screwed.

They should be doing what NJ is doing. They'll have a large amount of cap when 2010 rolls around, but they also have a fallout plan. If the Lebrons and Wades and Bosh's resign, they still have Harris, Lopez, Yi, and Courtney lee to build off of.

NY needs to find some good young players that could develop into something nice. Jordan Hill is a start. David Lee was also be a good builing block.

NY will get players in 2010, of that there is no question.

It will just be more of the second teir guys like Thriller suggested.

Second tier guys might not be enough to keep up with the Raptors if they can lock Bosh up.

The Knicks need to avoid the superstar chasing mentality of their cousins in the Bronx and focus on building a team.
I have a feeling that they'll end up a bit disappointed after putting all their eggs into the 2010 basket.

Problem is you need a couple of guys to build around as the main guys and they dont even have one guy yet where you look around the league and even the bottom dwellers have Al Jefferson, Kevin Martin etc.

Chandler and Gallinari could very well turn out to be just solid role players(which I think both will be) then what?

Exactly. Why would LB, Wade or Chris sign there? To play with players like Chander or Galliniari? They strike me as guys who want to win. The Knicks organization is depending on the "allure" of the city when, let's face it, Lebron is getting plenty famous in Cleveland. He doesn't need the NY spotlight. (Chris might).
Walsh has a really tough job rebuilding Isiah's mess there. Less focus on the biggest FA's and more focus on spreading the cash around to bolster the whole roster would be a smarter course of action, rather than trying to spend it all on one or two guys.

The Knicks suck. But let's face it, NYC is pretty much the epicenter of the world... While LeBron might not need NY to get famous, he would definitely be better off living in NY than in Cleveland, as would any other player in the NBA. I think it's the only city that players want to come to just so they can live there.

It's pretty amazing that they suck so much, and have pretty much sucked ever since Ewing left. But if they miss out on the top 3 (Bosh, Wade, LeBron), there are still other great players that will definitely come there. It's just a matter of who they surround those players with. Personally, considering that all 3 have all stated that they want to win, I highly doubt that if those guys do leave, they will leave for the Knicks. Unless they can get something like Bosh and Joe Johnson, or Bosh and Wade, or any other combination of TWO great players, they will still be years away from winning.

I'd really feel bad for Bosh if he goes to NYC. Raptor fans occasionally criticize him for being too soft, not clutch enough, not good enough of a leader, etc. The NY fans and media will rip him apart.

The Isiah Thomas years really set this team back, but they do have some good youth now with Hill, Gallinari and even Chandler. No idea what they might become. Chandler's a nice piece but I'd be surprised if he was ever considered as more than that. The other two - they may just have a couple of real building blocks. Toss in another high draft pick next year - unless it was previously traded by IT - and lots of room for free agents in 2010 and the Knicks could have a decent future even if one of the big guns of 2010 free agency don't choose to go there. It'll take time and patience though - something sorely lacking in NY of late.

That said, I hope they continue to mess up and suck huge for a long, long time.

It's like a candy store. Teams with the most money will have great options.
