KG: Hyper-competitive or complete prick?

Quote:
Garnett wasn’t exactly welcoming to Pacers rookies A.J. Price and Tyler Hansbrough when he visited Indianapolis this summer to film a Wheaties commercial. As Garnett exited Conseco Fieldhouse, Indiana assistant coach Lester Conner asked him to walk over and meet Price and Hansbrough, who were working out. Garnett wasn’t exactly friendly. According to Conner, Garnett continued to walk out and remarked, “[Expletive] your rookies.’’ Said Price, laughing, “That pretty much let me know where I was at on the totem pole. I thought I was going to have a chance to talk to him for a second so I can say, ‘What’s up?’ and introduce myself. But I guess he shot that down real quick.’’

Asshole but he's really a competitive dude so it could balance out. Still a prick move considering either of these players could possibly become his team-mates one day and he must know how it's like with rookies having been on a young T-Wolves team for many years. Prick move from a super-competitive guy is the verdict and it was uncalled for.

Some former Timberwolves have said that he is very loyal to his teamates. Sam Mitchell is one who comes to mind, but I've heard it from others. Smitch, who mentored Garnett in his early days, said that, after Garnett signed his big deal, KG began regularly taking the younger players and 10 day contract guys out to dinner on the road. Garnett would pay for some of their meals so that they could pocket their per diem money. If you role with KG, he apparently treats you like family.

Maybe KG was in a bad mood because Hansborough reminded him of Matt Bonner?

Being good at something doesn't make you less of an asshole. You don't see Tim Duncan acting like a total prick and he's a lot better than KG.

Quote:
It's no secret that Caucasian players represent a minority in the NBA, which makes the altercations Garnett has been involved in all the more troubling.
Quote:
He's certainly had his troubles with players like LaMarcus Aldridge, elbowing him in the head, Tim Duncan, slapping him in the back of the head, and Antonio McDyess, as Mcdyess chased a retreating Garnett around the court as the two were separated by team mates. Who could forget Garnett getting absolutely abused with an elbow to the face by former teammate Anthony Peeler, as Garnett failed to react.

But if you're asking Zaza Pachulia, Jose Calderon, Marco Belinelli, Matt Bonner, Rick Rickert, Andrew Bogut, Wally Szczcerbiak or Rasho Nestervic, you'd probably discover that Garnett takes an issue with white players.
Quote:
Garnett hounded Jose Calderon up and down the court waving his finger in the Spaniard's face, pestering the guard on defense. What business does a guy like Garnett have guarding a point guard like Calderon on the perimeter?
Quote:
Garnett laid Marco Belinelli out with an illegal screen, elbowing the Italian as he fell to the floor. The commentators then stated that it seemed like "Garnett had taken a personal animosity towards Marco Belinelli".
Quote:
Garnett was taken down to the floor in what was simply a hard foul by Matt Bonner. When Garnett saw that Bonner was standing and pointing to the crowd, Garnett charged at him attempting to punch him, and Sprewell followed suit by taking a cheap shot at Bonner.
Quote:
he constantly pestered Nesterovic about not being able to match his intensity, and while the situation never resulted in a physical confrontation, it mirrored Jordan and Cartwright in Chicago far too well.
Quote:
Garnett was suspended one game for striking Bogut in the face as the two were battling for a rebound.
Quote:
Garnett did just that with Zaza Pachulia on two different occasions, first elbowing the Georgian, and in the other altercation, laying him out with an illegal screen in a blowout Celtics victory.
Quote:
Garnett took offense to team mate Wally Szczerbiak yelling at him to call out screens by barking back that he needed to play better defense. Garnett followed by punching Szczerbiak in the face.

The race thing does seem pretty pervasive. But that makes no sense in that he was so loyal to Minnesota, which is a pretty white bread place. I think mostly he has no interest in being Kevin Garnett the guy that everybody wants to meet, and if that's the case I have no problem with that.

Wally and Rasho had altercations with him.

I don't mind it. I love KG and his attitude. Only that he is worried about is his Teammates playing well and winning. I'd have a prick like KG on my team any team.

Believe in his prime he I'd always hoped I could get him on my fantasy team

Oakley was one of the only NBA ballers that didn't shake hands or get in the "love in" before games. The only guys hand he shook was Ben Wallace only because they went to the same school. I don't see any prick threads written about him.

KG was never a cancer in his locker room and was nothing but loyal to Minny for YEARS. Something Toronto would like to see in Bosh.

Again .. Gimmie that prick anyday.

he probably thinks that he has a mental advantage by being a douche bag and trying to get in players head....

Yup, the fact that KG did NOT respond to Peeler's elbow is consistent with the view that he has a close relationship with teamates, or in this case, a former one. Also, notice that KG attacked McDyess for elbowing his teamate Mark Madsen....a white player. That complicates the view that he is simply a racist, but is consistent with KG's loyalty to teamates. From what I can tell, the issues with Wally and Rasho were because he perceived them to be soft, in my opinion. In the case of Wally, it may even have to do with Wally getting disproportionate credit for Minnesota's succes. Mark Madsen is a goof, but not soft, and thus might have had KG's respect.

Problems with a disproportinate number of "white boys", that's also consistent with KG's behaviour. But, in my opinion, those instances could be related to aspects of his personality that are more general than something specific like mainstream racism. He will get in a "white boys" face if he thinks he has, or can gain, an advantage. He's not necessarily a traditional racist. He may just subscribe to some stupid stereotypes, such as white players being more likely to be soft. That might be what accounts for his attitude. He's a phoney tough guy who goes after people he thinks are soft. More often than not, he perceives "white" players as soft. A boy like Bonner changes that perception, and we see what happened in that video. This is all just speculation, though. I want to make that explicilty clear. I'm just thinking out loud here; I'm not saying I'm committed to this position.

Apollo's post is interesting and I'm glad he brought that stuff up, because KG's history does raise some questions. I was not aware of all of the incidents Apollo listed, but the "race factor" had crossed my mind. In part because I can think of other non-violent incidents the Bleacher Report didn't mention. That is, the 2002 playoff series between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks. Garnett behaved like a total fucking clown in that series. Nash was the first target of the type of antics Garnett pulled with Jose. No finger wagging, but substantial taunting. The probable reason the situation didn't escalate and remain in people's minds is that Nash swept the Timberwolves. Garnett got down in a defensive crouch at one point and starting doing the "bring it on" hand gesture to Nash, but it did not end well for KG. And, to my knowledge, Nash was too classy to say anything. But he didn't really need to, since he ended up hitting a couple of jumpers with KG guarding him, and later blew right passed him on another possession. Part of the reason it stands out in my mind is because I was so shocked at how Nash schooled him. Nash shooting over 7 footers is pretty common stuff now, as we saw last night. In that same 2002 series, Nowitzki and Garnett had words, but nothing escalated. Probably because Nowitzki fucking torched Minnesota. Those dudes got the best of KG, so I'm not surprised he backed off. Once they proved themselves to be immune to his bullying, KG backed off. Later in 2007, when Minnesota decided they wanted to trade KG, Nash's Suns were at the top of the list of teams KG wanted to play for (before Boston traded for Ray Allen).

That's my rant. Just some thoughts.

This has nothing to do with any that.

This was during the off-season.

I mean Oakley even played cards with Tyrone Hill off the court.

I would've taken him 2 seconds to even just wave.
