Thunder Kevin Durant Shows Why He Is Ultimate Teammate on SI Cover

Quote:

DENVER -- No, Sports Illustrated isn't trying to sell more copies in Switzerland and Serbia by putting Thabo Sefolosha and Nenad Krstic on the cover with Oklahoma City star teammate Kevin Durant.

The magazine wanted Durant to pose for the cover of the Oct. 25 basketball preview issue, which hits newsstands Wednesday. The high-scoring forward said that was fine as long as he was joined on the cover by Sefolosha, a Swiss guard, and Krstic, a Serbian center.

Durant, regarded by many as the ultimate team player despite having led the NBA in scoring last season, didn't want to pose by himself. But why didn't he want to be joined by fellow Thunder top players Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green?

"Everybody knows about Jeff and Russell,'' Durant said.

"People don't really know about them too much for some odd reason,'' said Durant, who didn't play against the Nuggets due to Thunder coach Scott Brooks giving him his first game off this preseason. "So it was good to have them in there with me ... People don't really talk about them too much, but they're playing a role. They're guys we have to have on this team. So I want everybody to know how much they're important to us and what great teammates they are. So it was the chance to voice my opinion, and I'm glad Sports Illustrated put them on the cover with me.''

We need to figure out how to make more KD's. And not just in the game of basketball.

Yeah, if all the praise doesn't corrupt his mind, he will become something truly special. If he hulks out a bit, he could easily become one of the greatest pure scorers the game has seen. If he doesn't hulk out, without injuries, he's still a future hall of famer.

Class act. I thought he was going to pull off the overkill cliche and have the whole team behind him.

BTW, is that Krstic? I can barely recognize him when he's not tossing chairs.

This kid might replace Nash as the "league jesus" in short order.

Good for him.

Might?

He already has people saying he'll retire the all time NBA scorer. A little premature imo. I love watching him though, great talent.

so - the cynic in me thought about this for a bit, and realizing the importance of covers to magazine sales, I just don't buy that there wasn't some contrivance at play here. I would think that the idea of contrasting Lebron's big 3 came up, with the easy idea being about OKC's biggest 3. And then they likely realized that truly contrasting the Lebron cover would mean including a couple of not-so-well-known guys, and they could get the extra exposure by making this cover in and of itself a story that would get reported. Gold. On top of that they get extra burn in Europe. I'd be willing to bet that's how it all happened. Does that take anything away from the whole thing? Not a huge amount - because it comes down to the fact that without Durant being authentically believable in this context, it wouldn't have worked at all. So, even though I believe it's a little phony, it's still phony in a way that rings true, to the point where it's an overall positive all the same.

And now I return you to the altar of #35.
