Bulls JVG: Bulls will be fortunate to make the playoffs

Quote:
Jeff Van Gundy expects the Bulls to take a major step back next season.

"To lose (Derrick) Rose by itself is going to cost you -- even if you thought they were a 55-win team with Rose -- that costs you 12-15 games right there," Van Gundy said. "And then all the other guys I think people are overlooking. C.J. Watson even with his poor play to (Omer) Asik in that sixth game, listen, he was a very valuable back-up through all of Rose's injuries last year. He played well, and now, who's their backup, they have (Kirk) Hinrich and who? (Marquis Teague) No, no, he's not ... did you watch him in summer league? "Struggled" is being kind. That's not a knock. The 29th pick in the draft is such a hit-and-miss selection anyway. You have to give him time to grow and mature. But to think he's going to come in and play behind Hinrich next year ..."

Hinrich is expected to receive the bulk of the minutes at point guard.

"Their point guard situation last year was the MVP and a very good backup,” Van Gundy said. “This year it's a combo guard in Hinrich and we'll see who they can get as a backup. At the two-guard, (Rip) Hamilton is always hurt, and frankly in that Philly series, he's older, he's on the downside, and we'll see if he can bounce back ... Deng, you don't know where he's going to be injury-wise, and the frontcourt has been diminished. So to think that's a 50-win team ... listen, if they win half their games next year and make the playoffs, it's a heck of a year."

Hard to argue with, but all it means is th get in the lottery and Stern gives um #1 pick to add a dynasty to the third big market team in the US.... Miami, Lakers, Chicago...NYK will get Paul... NYC.

Do you guys understand how it works yet?

i dunno, Tim Duncan went to San Antonio the year after David Robinson went down. Granted those Spurs were horrific without Robinson, versus the Bulls sans Rose being just mediocre, but I don't think this is part of some master plan to make the Chicago Bulls a dynasty. It isn't even close to a guarantee that Derrick Rose comes back at even 75% of his former self.

Still pretty unbelievable that Brooklyn got CJ Watson for the vet min. I'm glad Van Gundy is acknowledging that he was a solid backup. I was shocked he didn't get an offer for like $2.5 mill from some team. Even if just a one year deal.

they should be pulling a san antonio spur move, tank

there going to have to, they don't have enough to win but there close, also they can't go out and spend anymore because there at the cap,

either way is a possible trade or the draft

I have a feeling they'll be the 7th seed when Rose comes back and in the final 6 weeks of the season with Rose in the lineup they'll end up 5th or 6th.

*Just noticed, can someone add the s to Bull in the title please. Lol

I agree. With the signings of Nate, Heinrich, Beli, Nazr, Teague and Vlady I think the Bulls have done enough to replace their bench. If Rip and Deng stay healthy I can see the Bulls pushing a 6-8 seed. When Rose comes back they'll be that much better and solidify a 5 or 6 seed.

Where do you guys think the Bulls would finish the season if they had Rose the whole season with this new bench??

There isn't a team within 7 or 8 wins of either the Heat or the Bulls with healthy rosters.

This coming year I would think Chicago would be a top 3 team and it would be a fight for position between Miami, Chicago and Boston. All 3 have great defense and great offense - hard to pick who would come out on top.

A big reason as to why the Bulls were the 1st seed the last couple years was how good their bench was. Their bench unit of Watson/Brewer/Gibson/Asik + Deng was the best defensive lineup in the league. That alone kept games close. However, they lost Watson/Brewer/Asik and could lose Gibson next season. Their bench is now not only more inconsistent, but they don't have the defence to make up for it. Could be a problem.

Another reason was that Thibs always has his team playing hard and will play hard for 48 minutes. This is unlike a team such as Miami who becomes complacent (they don't care about the regular season).

With that said, if Rose was healthy, the Bulls would almost certainly finish top 3 in the East because their team defence and rebounding is great.

The Celtics would have something to say about that.

Even with Rose healthy I would pick BOS in a 7-game series.

This years Bulls could have beat MIA and won the title.

Next years with Rose would be extremely lucky to beat BOS or MIA in a 7 game series.

With Bosh out? Possibly....

With Bosh playing? They'd have been done in 5 or 6 games again.

CHI has always lacked scoring depth beyond Rose (and sometimes Deng). Until they fix that they'll always be behind the best teams.

You guys way over value Watson/Brewer/Asik. Nate/Beli/Heinrich will provide a lot more scoring though other than Nate a little less defense but then it comes down to team and coaching. A healthy Rip and Deng With those three plus Nazr and I'm not sure why everyone is writing off the Bulls. When Rose comes back with the added players that can score I think the team will be better than this past year - the team will still be pretty good defensively but improved offensively.

However, without Rose it doesn't matter who they bring in. With Rose, he just makes everyone better. Seriously, those 3 that left aren't going to devastate the Bulls. I like who they brought in and truthfully, if Rip and Deng and Rose are healthy that team will be tough to beat.

The only player that will hurt their bench by not being there is Brewer, don't think Butler will cut it as a back up

I think Coach Thibo will guide them into the playoffs even with out Rose and all them role players they lost.

Rip is a shell of what he was. I doubt he becomes a 20-pt scorer again.

I still think that they lack firepower when they match up against teams like BOS, MIA, LAL and OKC who can all play pretty good D and have multiple big time weapons.
