Exclamation Jerry west not feeling a lakers championship this year

SLAM ONLINE | Jerry West Doesn?t Think Lakers ‘Will Be Good for Much Longer’

Quote:
The former Laker great doesn’t like the kind of defense L.A. is playing — something Phil Jackson agrees with — and sounds like he’d put his money on Boston winning it all this year (which Phil may not necessarily be in agreement with.) From the LA Times: “If there’s a loose ball now, how often do they get it?’ West asked as the keynote speaker Thursday during the annual Orange County Automobile Dealers Assn. luncheon. ‘The reason you ‘can’t play defense’ is because you can’t!’ ‘He’s right,’ Jackson said with a smile after Sunday’s practice when West’s comments were relayed to him. ‘We have to do a lot of things right to play defense the way we want to. Most of it is about controlling the tempo of the game. Some of it is about speed and outright speed. We’re not the fastest team on the boards. We can do it if we control things the right way.’ And West had more concerns about the Lakers than just their defense. He believes the team’s mileage and age will soon catch up to it: ‘I don’t think the Lakers will be good for much longer. You can keep a car running for a long time by changing the tires, etc. You can’t change a player’s tires.’ He also shared his belief that the Boston Celtics have a good chance to win the NBA title: ‘I think Boston is a very dangerous team,’ he said. ‘I would not want to play them every other night.’”

when boston put it on cruise control after the all-star break last year and was losing games to brutal teams, everyone was saying boston's window had closed and that it was time to blow it up. that team came within one quarter of winning the finals.

you just can't count out championship calibre teams until they've been eliminated from the playoffs. LA has been limiting Bynum's minutes to keep him fresh for the playoffs, and they're simply a different team without him starting and playing big minutes. With Bynum starting that team is built for the grind of the playoffs. Fact is, they haven't played well and they're still second in the West.

Never count out the Lakers. But i gotta say. Texas looks good this year. With the exception of Houston.

a year ago at this time people were saying Boston was done, too old. There were rumours Ray Allen was gonna be moved and look at what happened. I wouldn't count out the Lakers, not by a long shot. They're 20gms over .500.

I agree with West.... I think that the Lakers may still get to the Finals but I think that they're done for a while as far as titles go.

Smart money's on BOS.

Mehh, with Boston it all depends on health, especially KG, Shaq, JO, Perkins. If they can stay healthy then i agree with you. But i highly doubt that more then 2 of those players can stay healthy through an 8 week playoff marathon, let alone the rest of the season.

I think the Lakers are capable of shoring up their defense come playoff time. Also depends on Kobe's willingness to take less than 25 shots a game.

thing is, the lakers match up well with boston on a player by player basis. as hot as boston may be going into the finals (beating the heat and all), i think if there is a team that's going to knock boston out it's the Lakers.

Come playoff time, Lakers will step up like any other elite team. They're just keeping their players fresh.

spurs look like there on cruise control just because of popovich's style of slow half court ball, plus timmy hasn't been playing big minutes too.

problem with the lakers is they're over playing gasol

I wouldn't feel comfortable betting on any team this year. There are 4 or 5 scenarios that seem plausible to me. I think playoff seeding could end up dictating some things, just because matchups seem to matter for some of the top 5 or 6 teams in the league (more than some past seasons). Boston and Miami should be fighting hard to finish in the top seed. I mean, who wants to play Chicago in the 2nd round? Yikes! *shrugs shoulders*

don't count out OKC. they are still tweaking their defense but they should be rdy playoff time. and the lakers are still the lakers, however they do seem to lack something this year. after seeing them lose to the heat so easily, maybe they don't have the fire to win again.
celts said they built their team to counter the heat and i believe they will do just that. the title holder this year could very well be the C's.

I was going to say OKC one series later in the playoffs then last year, may push them over the top, not too mention San An is going to be deadly come play off time. It going to be a harder road for both Boston and the Lakers. I think Boston takes it though. Last year's final was really determined by the foul trouble the Celtics found themselves in late in games. This year with all that help up front, expect a lot of hard fouls throughout.
