Jamison: Wizards Are Talking Title

Wizards forward Antawn Jamison says that the team is talking about contending for a title this season.

"I've been around here for six years and championship talk wasn't a norm around our locker room. That's all we're talking about now," Jamison told the Washington Post. "If we stay healthy, I think we can compete with the upper echelon of the NBA."

That's certainly bold talk coming from a team that won just 19 games last season.

"I don't care," Jamison added. "What you mean raising the bar too high? We won 19 games last year and I'll be honest with you, we didn't have a lot of our horses. But I don't have anything else to play for. I'm not going to sit here and sugar coat things because it's not the right thing to say. I believe it.

"I believe playing the game the right way and staying healthy, we can compete with Boston, we can compete with Cleveland and Orlando and if you can compete with those teams, you can put yourself in that category as far as teams that can contend for a championship."

Big difference between competing and contending, I think, though it is of course an argument of semantics.

I dunno, they got a pretty good team there. Depth at a lot of positions and if Arenas returns to full strength they're a pretty damn good team.

Why some people are laughing is beyond me.

They're talented no doubt, but they aren't an upper echelon team. To me an upper echelon team is a team that has an excellent and realistic chance at making the Conference finals, and that ain't them. They're good and are in the mix with us at the 4-6 spots in the Conference. And if Arenas goes down again (which imo is 50/50) they'll struggle to get better then 6-7th.

So, they're at the 4th seed and that's their ceiling huh?

Did anyone think Orlando was an ECF last year? Most had them at a long shot, while everyone had either Boston or Cleveland as Orlando as that third team that didn't pose a threat to the other 2.

Odd things happen, and I look at their starting five and then you have guys like McGuirre, Blatche and Young, some real nice pieces off that bench and I could see them pushing those top teams easily. All it takes is to win 4 games out of 7 and you can lose 3.

Is this guy fo' real? I mean the Wizards WILL improve SIGNIFICANTLY over last season. But to suggest that they will compete for a championship is being overly optimistic bordering on the hilarious. Wizards are looking nice though:

G: Agent Zero/James/Foye

SG: Foye/Stevenson/Young

SF: Butler/Miller/McGuire

PF: Jamison/Blatche/Oberto

C: Haywood/McGee

Their backcourt is stacked and overall have a nice balanced team. Not too sure about their D. IMO, if they stay healthy they should be fighting the Raps for the 5th seed and a chance to make it out of the first round.

I definitely like that winning mentality though. Wish we had outspoken and confident players like that on the Raps!

So, you go on to say that they have a nice team, but have no chance to win a championship?

I'm not gonna say they're a favorite, but they're a legit 10 deep, with some experience on that squad. They'll be better than a lot of people think.

Yes. Is there something that I wrote that has you confused? They will not win the championship this season, but they do have a "nice" team. Like I said, should compete for the 5th or possibly even 4th seed. There are a lot of teams in that "second tier" that will compete but will not be legitimate contenders for the championship. Do you understand?

And yes I agree with you, they will do a lot better than people think. Just not championship contenders.

I'll reserve judgment to see how Arenas plays after returning from 2 years of injuries

If arenas averages more then 20ppg then there back and on track and have a huge chance of making the playoffs.

I think they make the playoffs regardless of whether he plays or not.

This team has probably the best offense in the NBA, how could they not be considered a threat to play against? How could they not be feeling they could win it all?

I guess people would respect him more if he came out and said, "we suck big hairy gonadulars.".

And is there any other way to enter the season other than thinking you're going to win it all? If you're not thinking that, then what's the point of even playing?

"Second place is first place for losers!"

I'm so glad you know how to talk down to me! Thanks for treating me like a 3 year old!

Anyways, my point is any team that makes into the playoffs can be considered a championship calibre team because guess what, they've made it to the point where anything can truly happen. The problem is people have a narrow definition of what a championship team is. Again, how many people legitimately thought Orlando was a championship calibre squad? Anyone?

Washington, as I said, is 10 deep. They have a lot of fire power, a damn good coach in Saunders and pieces they can move if they wish to add players at the deadline.

So, I call that team championship calibre, because even if you're a fourth seed, you're still one of the better teams there are and all it takes is to win 4 of 7.

Also, please, never, EVER, talk down to me again. Thanks.

Saying that any team that makes it into the playoffs is a championship calibre team, is a stretch to say the least. So by your reasoning, last year Philly(6) and Detroit(8) or Chicago(7) were championship contenders?!
There's a reason any of those teams didn't make it out of the first round. Now, if you were to say that they can compete with the the top tier of teams, that would be a different story. But that's how the NBA goes. On any given night any team can pull an upset. The Pacers beating the Lakers last year is one example of many.

However, there is a reason that teams considered championship calibre tend to make it to the CF or Finals and that teams considered "middle tier" usually don't make it past the 1st or 2nd round. Like you said teams have to win 4 of 7 and to make it to the Finals or CF the "middle tier" of teams just don't have what it takes, whatever reason that may be.

Off the top of my head I can only remember the Warriors to have pulled off a major upset in a 7 games series recently. How often does that happen though? Rarely. They got beat in 5 by the Jazz next round.

In general, the teams considered to be championship calibre consistently go deep in the playoffs, while the pretenders face 1st or 2nd round exits.

Again, I'm not arguing that the Wiz don't have the potential to be a good team in the NBA, they will pose serious offensive threats to any team, nice group of young talented athlete's, and great coach. They should be middle of the pack. They are IMO just not championship calibre- yet.

By the way, from the beginning of last season I had the Magic as legitimate contenders for the championship.
