James considering Europe in 2010? Price tag: $50M/yr

Quote:

That appeared to be the only question until this summer, when the Redeem Team convened for the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Now the buzz is LBJ might head for Europe to the highest bidder $50 million is the price tag.
Fox Sports

When I read this I thought "holy shit". If I were James, hell yeah I'd go to Europe for $50M/yr. That's probably twice as much as any team over in the NBA could afford.

Ex2k 08-16-2008 02:40 PM

I'd do it in a second... 50 mil? wow..

but maybe he wants to win a NBA championship?

jeffb 08-16-2008 03:12 PM

This was put up on here a couple of weeks ago.:ladeeda:

Screw the championship 50 MIL man how can you refuse that no team in the NBA will have that much money.
And also since there are rumous of him going to NJN after his contract is done, it's not like he'll have a chance to win a championship there so if I were LBJ I would get on a plane and get to Europe as fast as I can

Thought that was about Kobe going there to play for $40M/yr.

There are NBA teams who could afford it, its just that the league has rules which prevent it. Euro teams don't have to worry about salary caps or luxury taxes.

Gurk 08-16-2008 03:29 PM

No Kobe was just saying that if he got that offer he would go

Kuzzy 08-16-2008 05:06 PM

its all talk
lebron wants to make a name for himself in the NBA first
fill up stats categorys and so on
then leave to europe years later for probably even a greater contract
as for kobee
huge question mark

Apollo 08-16-2008 07:11 PM

LeBron already has a name for himself. He's the most recognizable NBA star in the league.

I don't see how he can possibly hope to get a contract bigger than $50M/yr by waiting. We're talking two more seasons before he becomes a free agent. He might even have his ring by then...

Gurk 08-17-2008 10:26 AM

If he has a ring by then the offer might go up and european teams will be giving up like 60 mil for him. Who knows it could happen

Apollo 08-17-2008 01:57 PM

I'm not so sure if Euro teams really care about NBA championships. If a Euro team offers him $50M/yr take it or leave it and the highest bidding NBA team, which would be the Cavs, are offering max money...Say $100M for FIVE seasons...Then I'm thinking he's taking the route that gets him $100M in less than half the time and effort.

Gurk 08-17-2008 02:52 PM

That is true and IMO if LBJ goes on any team in Euro I think that team will win the whole thing

INSIDER 08-17-2008 06:48 PM

50 mil? see ya Lebron.
he'd be insane to pass that up... and for what? to make his name in the NBA... or to be considered a hall of famer... who cares.
no one can even come close to matching an offer like that.

Gurk 08-17-2008 07:01 PM

If there was no salary cap every single team would be ofering that kind of money to LeBron but the thing is with the Salary cap no team can ever give that money to a player unless they want to pay like 40 mil in luxury tax

jdirvin 08-17-2008 07:37 PM

All a ploy to get more cash in USA, he'll be getting quite a bit from the nets in 2010

im talking ruling stats categories
and he cant do that in 2 years
and no he hasnt made a name for himself other then King James
lets see him win a ring
mvp
and break some stats records
thenn make your way out

MetroStar 08-18-2008 08:21 PM

You forget something. The key element of the story. I didn't notice any European team offering LeBron $50 million/year. That's a crazy number even for Europe. The only thing is that he said that he would come for that money. Nobody said yet that would pay that money. Do not exaggerate one single statement. It's not a big deal (yet).

Gurk 08-18-2008 10:27 PM

Oh I thought he really got got that offer

Not at all. THERE IS NO OFFER
. Do not get confused.

Ugo Ferst 08-19-2008 12:08 PM

In other news, im considering being a fan of a european team for $50 a month.

MangoKidHoops 08-19-2008 12:13 PM

If Beckham got a contract that large, why wouldn't one of the NBA "superstars"?
I mean, you're not only earning that money tax free, you instantly become a "god", you play about 40 games less, and you brand your name all over the world, a la Beckham - that's what it's all about. I'm sure one of the Russian Oil tycoons will make a play for a superstar come 2 years time.
