Default Jackson Tells Carmelo He Expects To Hire Steve Kerr

Quote:
Phil Jackson told Carmelo Anthony he expects the New York Knicks to hire Steve Kerr as head coach.

Jackson and Anthony met for dinner in Manhattan last week.

Anthony will be a free agent on July 1.

Anthony and Jackson didn't discuss any other candidates coaching the Knicks.

"Phil wanted [Anthony] to know that Kerr and his thinking will simply be an extension of himself," one of the sources said. "He wanted Carmelo to know he'll still be able to coach him by extension."
RealGM

Coach 'Melo by extension through Kerr??....go Riley go....oh I mean go Jackson go....

Maybe I should have waited to post this....another puppet for another puppet master, would Kerr go for that or is it more about PJ coaching Kerr and then training Kerr....so really, he's PJ by Proxy....

Made up stories are fun. It's like the telephone game that you play in school, I wonder what Jackson really told him.

Bingo. Other than Rambis who else would institute the triangle for Jackson?

Yeah because former players have never transitioned as a successful coach in the NBA. It's not like it doesn't happen all the time.

I just think Jackson in NY won't work and him dictating how the rookie coach should coach and what system they play will not work. Maybe I just hate NY, but I think this will be bad.

I just don't understand why Phil Jackson would decline a coaching position so that he could tell somebody else how to coach.

And I don't understand why Kerr would leave a broadcasting position so that he could be a puppet coach.

Don't bet against them. They'll be in the playoffs next year.

It would be in Melo's best interest to sign with the Bulls if they amnesty Boozer. As for Jackson possibly wanting to get Kerr to coach, I think it would be a good choice. As Jeff said though, there are much better, proven coaching options out on the market right now.

None that can implement the the Triangle like Jackson wants though - except Kerr and Rambis.

Kerr will be an interesting choice, was a player then GM and now possibly coach. PJ was a player then coach and now GM. PJ coached and educated Kerr. I can see the two forming a symbiotic relationship and complementing the gaps in their respective experiences. I can also see Kerr taking over for PJ as GM to continue the path/legacy that PJ is going to set up. PJ is 68, I don't think he'll stay more than a few years. More I think about it, the more Kerr makes complete sense for the Knicks with PJ as the GM.

If Jackson pulls this off his legacy will be untouchable, if it all falls apart then people will remember his colossal failure first.

One person familiar with the situation said Kerr wouldn’t even consider the Knicks under the old James Dolan-Steve Mills pre-Jackson power structure. Kerr also considers it vital for Carmelo Anthony to re-sign, so accepting the job would mean he’s convinced it will happen. Jackson told Anthony during their dinner meeting Tuesday he expects to hire Kerr. New York Post - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm#sthash.fqrP49OR.dpuf
The media is certainly spinning as a done deal.

I think it has a little something to do with Phil's health. I remember a few years back Phil was interested in getting back into coaching if he was only allowed to coach during the home games and some GM's were weary about that. Something along those lines.
