Isola: Knicks are leaning towrds picking Henderson

For weeks, Walsh has been trying to trade up to acquire Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, who coincidentally could be drafted second by Memphis. There is a possibility that if Rubio falls to Sacramento at No. 4, the Knicks could trade with the Kings once Nate Robinson becomes a free agent in July.

"It will be a dream to play in Madison Square Garden," Rubio said Wednesday.

But with the Timberwolves acquiring the fifth pick from Washington, a more likely scenario has the Knicks keeping the eighth pick and hoping that Davidson's Stephen Curry falls. However, it is unlikely that Curry will get past the Golden State Warriors at No. 7.

That's where things could get interesting. If Memphis guard Tyreke Evans is available, the Knicks will likely choose between Evans and Duke shooting guard Gerald Henderson. The Knicks, according to a source, are leaning toward Henderson. The 6-foot-5 Henderson wowed the Knicks during his workout two weeks ago. They like his athleticism and his mature demeanor and believe that Henderson can step right in and make an immediate impact.

"Think about it, he can do for the Knicks what Raja Bell did for (Mike) D'Antoni in Phoenix," said one Eastern Conference GM. "He's a big time athlete that will get better offensively and he will give the Knicks some defense."

Henderson acknowledged yesterday that he is high on the Knicks' draft board. He also admitted that his college coach, Mike Krzyzewski, has had conversations with D'Antoni on his behalf. Coach K and D'Antoni worked together for two years with USA Basketball, and it was Krzyzewski who convinced the Knicks to sign one of his former players, free agent Chris Duhon, last July.

"I feel like defensively I've gotten pretty good the last couple of years at Duke," Henderson said. "Defensively, I can definitely bring something to a team."

Walsh is in talks with Minnesota GM David Kahn, his former protégé at Indiana, about buying one of Minnesota's four first-round picks. The Wolves own the fifth, sixth, 18th and 28th picks.
Evans won't be availabale anyway.
