I like Derrick Rose and all....

...But really?

Quote:
In a letter to Memphis, the NCAA says an unknown person took the SAT for a player—with his knowledge—and that the player used it to get admitted. The governing body says the athlete played for the Tigers in the 2007-08 season and the 2008 NCAA tournament. Only one person fits that description—Rose.

Compounding his difficulties were the media reports that Rose was one of four Simeon athletes with a grade that got bumped up for a month—long enough to be reflected on their transcripts. That maneuver was revealed in a report by the Chicago Public Schools’ inspector general, which didn’t identify the school or players who were involved.

Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Monique Bond said the students involved probably didn’t know about the grade change.

Memphis, meanwhile, is facing the possibility of having 38 wins and a run to the title game wiped off the books, which would make this the second time the school—and a program coached by the recently departed John Calipari—had to vacate a Final Four appearance.

Go easy on the kid.

If you had the benefit of knwoing that if you made that decision, and you cheated the SAT to get into school (which is a joke, the NCAA is the AHL for the NBA, it aint about school for its athletes)

Would you say no?

If it meant you had a way to prove yourself and you'd grab a contract for Chicago, and then win ROTY on your way to a huge life, would you???

Don't be so quick to Judge the kid.

It doesn't make it right. Maybe he should have took things more seriously? I played hockey, baseball and basketball in school and still found enough time to hold down good enough grades to go to University. I'm nothing special.

SJ that's ridiculous.

Irregardless of what the NCAA is, it's still under the umbrella of academia, therefore it should be treated with the same respect. If you're not intelligent enough to pass you SAT test, then yes, you shouldn't be allowed to enter college and the NCAA etc.

If it were me, no. Why? Because at the end of the day, I have to look at myself in the mirror and ask myself what type of man I am. And if I had to cheat to get somewhere, then I've disrespected myself and anyone close to me.

Everything is about the easiest possible way, instead of actually attempting things and failing and learning from those failures.

The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out. Thomas Macaulay (yeah, i looked it up... couldn't remember the full quote)

Live by it, and you'll sleep better at night. If he knew he didn't have the smarts to get into College, then he could have gone to Europe to play. He might not have gone 1st overall, but he'd still make his millions.

its a shame really...
these kids are so good at sports that they are pretty much given a free pass when it comes to grades and school work.
i'm willing to bet Rose is as dumb as a doorknob when it comes to school, but he can read plays and defences like a genius.
the only problem is, he's probably never had to do a single hour of actual homework or study for a test his whole life, because he's a superstar athlete.
its not his fault he isnt smart, its his teachers and people around him that made him believe he didnt have to do any work to get by... and unfortunately, they were right.

The problem with these issues is the people who commit the crime typically go unpunished. If Memphis were to get some NCAA Infraction Calipari is gone and there's nothing they can do about Rose. It's not like Stern can suspend him for a year w/o pay b/c of something he did in high school. Wouldn't be fair to the Bulls or the NBA.

Well this is an American school system issue, not an NCAA or NBA issue. They need to more severely reprimand the people deciding to give kids free passes because they can shoot a basketball.

an update from espn.com. apparently memphis knew as of the end of the 2007-2008 season. my issue with this has nothing to do with whether he is dumb or smart, but rather the dishonesty involved in it, if it is indeed true.

Quote:
One month after Memphis lost to Kansas in overtime on April 7, 2008, in one of the most thrilling national championship games in recent memory, the Tigers were rocked by an e-mail from the NCAA.

It was then that Memphis was first notified that star freshman point guard Derrick Rose, who helped the Tigers to an NCAA-record 38 wins and was soon going to become the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA draft by his hometown Bulls, had an invalidated standardized test score the previous year at Chicago's Simeon High School, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the e-mail.

The University of Memphis' legal counsel, Sheri Lipman, would not identify the student-athlete as Rose, but said Monday, "for the student-athlete, whoever that was, the first indication that we got was in early May [2008] that his score was being invalidated."

Memphis' administration knew that if this were indeed true, then coach John Calipari's team rode the superstar exploits of an ineligible player to an extraordinary season that was stopped just short of the program's first national title.

that way the team and school wasnt aware of this until after the NCAA final... and by that time the season was over, and everyone pretty much knew rose was gonzo.

hmmmm, i guess Mario Chalmers hitting that game tying shot and Kansas winning it all was probably the best thing to happen to NCAA, Rose and Memphis, because i'm guessing that they would have to strip Memphis of the title and this would have blown up.

I'm curious what would have happened had they won the national title. Could the NCAA have revoked it?

Exactly. Definitely better that Memphis didn't win it.
