When Dwight Howard asked to be traded, the Magic informed him that the team will not let his request dictate their timetable for a decision.

"[S]ources close to the team said there will be no rush to judgment on Howard's fate, no matter how uncomfortable the relationship might get leading up to the March trade deadline," writes Sam Amick. "When Howard requested a trade earlier this week, the source said he was told the Magic wouldn't succumb to the mounting pressure and that Howard should be prepared to play for the Magic for the foreseeable future."

A complicating factor could be that Orlando is investigating possible tampering by the Nets, the team that is reportedly Howard's first choice.

Interesting tactic....if the magic hold off till March I couldn't see that many suitors then, especially when an annoyed Howard just comes out and says forget it, not signing an extension with anyone, I'll play out the last couple months, pick where I want to go and screw you - then the team I go to won't have to gut themselves to get me (like LBJ and Bosh)

The Orlando Magic abruptly pulled Dwight Howard off the trade market Wednesday in the midst of discussions with other teams, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Magic have decided that none of the various offers they've received, most notably from the New jersey Nets and Los Angeles Lakers, is worth executing.

At some point the player has to realize that the world doesn't revolve around them, and that the guy you've been slagging publicly (whose responsibility it is to ensure the success and fiscal future of the franchise and facilitate trading your unhappy ass) isn't interested in making you happy because you're Dwight Howard.
Time to shut up and collect you're millions playing basketball.

Los Angeles radio host John Ireland said on the air Monday that a reliable source of his says the Nets will execute a trade for Dwight Howard on Tuesday.
Ireland points out that his source correctly reported the LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Miami deal last year, and for what it's worth Ireland is well-connected within the Lakers scene and thus is within arm's distance of the trade action. This could mean that Brook Lopez is heading to Orlando, but then again we'll need to see where all of this goes.

Maybe because if they don't trade him there is a high likelyhood they will lose him for nothing. Think about it.

I'm sure many of us have heard rumours/reports about the role endorsements play in dictating NBA transactions. This type of speculation is not ground breaking. I just thought it MIGHT shed a bit of light on why Dwight won't end up in Chicago, even though it makes sense from several other perspectives.

Quote:
Dwight Howard has delivered the Magic a list of three teams that can trade for him this season with the assurance he’ll sign a contract extension with them: the Los Angeles Lakers, New jersey Nets and Dallas Mavericks. The Bulls have the most attractive package of young players – and the possibility of draft picks – for the Magic, but the NBA that Jordan created for superstar players is a significant part of the reason that Howard will take a pass on Chicago.

Adidas has two franchise endorsers: Derrick Rose and Howard. Rose signed a $94 million extension with the Bulls, and sources say Adidas is working on a lifetime shoe deal for him now.

And as one high-ranking sneaker executive says, “Adidas simply cannot have its two signature players on the same team in the same market. … Derrick is the face of that market, owns that market, and Adidas can’t possibly have maximum bang for its buck with Dwight there.

“It serves Adidas no purpose. They need them as rivals in competing markets.”

Howard knows this, too. He has an Adidas renewal on deck in the next year, and Los Angeles and Brooklyn guarantee him maximum money. The shoes aren’t the sole reason, but it’s a reality. In an NBA where the owners want the superstars worth $50 million and more to make far less than market value, it’s hard to imagine you’ll get them to take far less on endorsements.

And as had been the case with LeBron James’ free agency, Rose will never go out of his way to convince Howard this is a trade that he ought to push. “Derrick is too loyal to the guys he plays with to get involved with doing that,” a source close to Rose said. “It wasn’t his nature [to recruit] with LeBron, and it still isn’t now.”

For the record, Adidas’ vice president for global basketball, Lawrence Norman, says: “As a partner, we’re completely supportive of Dwight with whatever decision he makes. He’s an outstanding partner with broad appeal to fans across the world.”

Norman is telling the truth: Adidas will still pay Howard well wherever he winds up, but Orlando and Chicago won’t get him paid and marketed the way Los Angeles and Brooklyn will. Rose could become the highest-paid shoe endorser in the NBA with his next Adidas contract, sources said, and remember: Shoe companies don’t market teams. They market individuals. That’s true of the NBA, too.

That’s why Howard will end up with the Lakers or the Nets – Los Angeles or New York. Everything could change with Howard in Chicago, because everything changes with the league’s best center and best point guard on the floor together. Nevertheless, this NBA season starts with Howard in Orlando, and so much of the sport’s balance of power will be dictated by where he ends it.

Warriors Golden State interested in making an offer for Howard

Quote:
As the Orlando Magic consider deals for Dwight Howard, the Golden State Warriors have emerged as aggressive suitors for the NBA’s best center, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Golden State management is willing to take Howard as a one-season “rental,” with the hope of selling him on signing a long-term deal before he enters free agency this summer. Like most teams, Golden State has inquired with Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith, but the Magic have yet to commit to aggressively pursuing a trade of Howard.

For the Magic to become intrigued with package, two things would likely have to appeal to them: rebuilding around young point guard Stephen Curry; and the Warriors’ salary-cap space to absorb the three years and $34 million left on Hedo Turkoglu’s contract. The possibility of the pursuit could be complicated by questions about the sturdiness of Curry’s surgically repaired right ankle. The Warriors are willing to part with either of their two guards – Curry or Monta Ellis – but teams clearly will watch how Curry recovers from his recurring ankle sprains.

The Utah Jazz own the Warriors’ 2012 first-round pick, which is protected through No. 7, but Golden State would give its next available first-rounder to the Magic. The availability of the rest of the Warriors roster, plus future picks, would be wide open for negotiation, sources said.

Most teams aren’t willing to gut rosters to get Howard only to lose him to free agency in the summer. Yet, the Warriors made a run for Chris Paul as a rental, and are determined to offer more for Howard, a franchise center. Golden State is probably five years away from a new downtown San Francisco arena that will be more appealing to star players, but owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber are determined to sell a top-five media market and rabid fan base to players. They would have to take a huge risk to make a deal for Howard, but sources said they’re determined to try whatever it takes to satisfy the Magic’s needs for a trade – including the construction of more complicated three- and four-team trade scenarios.

The Warriors think they can sell Howard on the endorsement possibilities of a global NBA star in Silicon Valley. From tech companies to social media, Golden State thinks Howard would find an untapped market, as well as a nod from Adidas, who is preparing a new deal for him. And the bottom line is this: Should Golden State make a deal for Howard, he would have to take $30 million less over the length of a contract extension to leave this summer.

Far from frontrunners, Golden State’s best chance of acquiring Howard could come with a failure of the Magic and Los Angeles Lakers to agree on a deal centered on Andrew Bynum. Howard has told Orlando management that he would sign extensions with three teams – the Dallas Mavericks, Lakers and New jersey Nets – but the Nets and Mavericks aren’t in strong position to make deals for Howard.

Orlando has been iffy on Nets center Brook Lopez, who has been lost for several weeks with a broken foot. Howard has indicated the Nets are his preference, and they do have the salary-cap space to sign him this summer. Still, Orlando has until the March 15 trade deadline to get a return on Howard, who insists he will leave as a free agent.

Despite Howard’s preference to go to the Brooklyn-bound Nets to play with Deron Williams, those close to Howard still believe he’s fluctuating on his future and could be sold on different scenarios.
