"How much $$$ would that translate into Vs. Kobe - LeBron? What would the difference be? Does Yao draw superbowl/Olympic ratings because of the chinese population? 2 Billion people... At least 1.3 Billion people with TV access. Nearly 5 times the U.S. population to potential watch and advertise to. Has there been a realistic situation to put Yao in the finals thus far? (hurt last year). Teams are selling players for no value these days just so they don't have to pay them. Teams are in the process of, or are close to going under. If the difference between Kobe vs. LeBron or Yao vs. LeBron is $500 Million to $1 Billion in revenue from TV advertising sales doesn't this have to be done from a business standpoint? Im no Conspiracy theorist, but..."

I don't know the numbers but I think 300 mil are in the middle class in China. China's pop is 1.3 bil
there is still a lot of poverty their and not everyone has a TV
and remember the purchasing power isn't as strong as the US

but I venture that half the population will be watching

people will become more wealthy down the road but will they remember ads 10 years later

anyway, I think the NBA, Nike already have a strong presence in China
NBA and another company are already partnering to build 10 arenas in China
plus most will watch the finals anyway
the #1 selling jersey in China is Kobe's

I remember reading somewhere that there are 300 million people playing basketball in China. 300 million. Screw expansion in Europe, China's salivating for NBA basketball.

You don't believe it until you've actually been TO China. The faces of NBA players are everywhere. Yao Ming is the closest thing to a god. There are basketball courts on every corner. It doesn't seem like such a "gross overestimation" once you've seen it.

you've been all over rural china?? i somehow doubt the vast majority of impoverished chinese in small villages would care, i dont think any country, nevermind one of that size, could get half the country to watch 4 games, maybe a game 7, but still then i dont believe it, i dont even think half of india watches the finals of cricket when india is in it, and they love that sport too.

I should check the Olympic basketball ratings for when china played, im willing to bet half the country didnt watch that either, and it was the damn olympics, in their backyard.

it's over 1 billion, it's like 1.3, so you really think 700 million or so would watch??

The Kobe fanfare there rivals mine.
I don't think it matters who is in the Finals with regards to Yao, Kobe, or Lebron.

of course not...
but i think 200 million isnt that far of a stretch.

and if Yao was the centerpiece in the finals, that number would double for sure.

Not only have I been all over rural China, but I'm also Yao Ming's father and have once served as Deng Xiaoping's economic advisor. Ni hao ma!

It's called an educated guess based on observations. Someone living in Canada for an extended period time could easily deduce that the majority of the population (or at least a good percentage) watches hockey. Whether it be through commercials, advertisements in the paper, billboards, you name it. Same deal with China.

yes, to the educated guesser, Toronto is hockey town, therefore hockey must be the most popular sport in it, right?? Be really, it isnt.

Im not saying im guaranteed to be right on this, but you really think 650 MILLION ppl in China alone would watch every game of the NBA finals?? I find it highly doubtful, just using my common sense. But who knows, maybe my common sense is uncommon?

well, we will never find out since soft-ass yao is out!
but do you guys still think china will get more viewers than the rest of the world combined for the finals since kobe and lebron (assuming they are in the finals) are the most popular nba players in china aside from yao?

China is an extreme basketball country. My friend is an exchange student from Taiwan, which is a separate country that speaks Chinese, but was once part of China and he says that EVERYBODY plays basketball where he lives. Everywhere you go, everybody loves basketball, and there's courts everywhere.

I make a comparison to Chinese people watching Yao play ball to the Super Bowl. You don't need to be into the sport or know the rules, but just the popularity hooks you. Hardcore bball fans wil watch it, but my money is that the average joe will not
