Doesn't the NHL owns the coyotes? I agree though it seems inappropriate to me. At the very least it seems wrong.

Where could they land? Look at it this way: If a new owner is willing to spend more than $300 million -- the value assigned Monday by Stern -- on an NBA franchise with the understanding he can place the team wherever he pleases, then New Orleans becomes one of several options. The new owner will relate his options to those of LeBron James last summer: James was tied in every way to the Cleveland area, but after his Cavaliers contract expired he came to view his hometown less sentimentally and more clinically, resulting in his business decision to take his talents elsewhere.

Unless fans swarm to the New Orleans Arena in order to keep their franchise at home for the shortterm, the new owner of the Hornets will place New Orleans in a pool among larger available markets, including Chicago, Anaheim, San Jose and Kansas City. There hasn't been a lot of talk elsewhere about Chicago, but it is the third biggest market in North America and it has only one NBA team. New York will have two franchises when the Nets move to Brooklyn in two years, and Los Angeles has two. In suburban Chicago near O'Hare Airport, the Allstate Arena could serve as a temporary NBA home until a new arena could be built, depending on the resources of the new owner.

If the Hornets are able to escape their lease, then New Orleans will have to compete with other cities to serve as home to an NBA team.

Not KC!

Source: Hornets Could Move To Kansas City

There is reason to believe that the NBA is looking into the possibility of moving the Hornets to Kansas City, a league source told Sam Amick of FanHouse.

The Sprint Center was built in Kansas City just three years ago.

The NBA is following through with plans to take ownership of the Hornets, who will become the first team ever to be owned by the league.

they're going to KC cause they already have the arena and no hockey team
theres no harm in testing it for a year or 2 until someone like Seattle gets something together
who know, KC might find some success like OKC

Dang. I don't see KC as a good long term fit. Especially for a team that's not going to be any good for a while.

Nice arena, sure. But Carolina and Indy are perfect examples of great college basketball states that don't share the same fervor for the NBA game.

If it was up to me, the Hornets play relocate to the Unabomber's shack in Montana.

maybe you weren't around in the Reggie Miller days, but Indiana had one of the best crowds in the 90s
no one likes watching a crap team for a decade

The Pacers were championship contenders no less than 6-7 years ago. Fact is, they've been losing money for a while now. And in the NBA, from an owner's perspective, it's "what have you done for me lately".

Chances of NBA team at Sprint Center are not good - KansasCity.com

Quote:
The NBA will have to approve a relocation and team up with a new owner to swipe a team from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill.

More importantly, there is no apparent potential owner to make it work. This week, sources in or close to four of the wealthiest families in Kansas City told me for this column they have no interest.
Neither fact eliminates us. But it does mean weíre a long way from season-ticket deposits.

Also, it means that AEG is on the clock to work the connections we heard so much about when voters approved funding for the $276 million Sprint Center.
Quote:
American City Business Journals did a study that showed the Kansas City regionís total income is $57 billion short of whatís needed to support the teams we already have ó let alone 41 NBA home dates with an average ticket price around $50.

The Business Journalís study included 82 markets in America and Canada, and found Kansas City to be more overextended than all but four.
We make up the nationís 31st biggest market, according to Nielsen. No. 23 Pittsburgh is the smallest with three major-league teams, and remember they almost lost the NHLís Penguins and the Pirates are consistently near the bottom of MLB attendance.

Mayor Mark Funkhouser has shown no particular interest in soliciting a team, leaving it up to AEG and pointing out that the Sprint Center is well ahead of its revenue projections without an anchor tenant.
Actually, there are people who study such things for a living who will tell you the Sprint Center would make less money because a new pro team would require prime dates and a sweetheart lease.

Documents obtained by Deadspin.com show the Hornets lost $500,000 over 2008 and 2009, and as of last summer carried an $83 million deficit. This isnít a cash cow that might be moving, itís closer to a sieve, and thatís with superstar point guard Chris Paul, who will be a free agent after next season.
