Grizzlies, Rudy Gay Unlikely To Reach Extension

Looks like another quality player might be hitting FA in 2010

Quote:
The Grizzlies are discussing a possible contract extension with Rudy Gay, but they remain far apart on an agreement.

Memphis has until Oct. 31 to extend Gay's contract. If they don't, the forward will become a restricted free agent next summer.

"We've had our discussions. We'll have more with two weeks left to see if there is any common ground," general manager Chris Wallace told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "I don't want to put any measurement on it. We've had periodic discussions through the summer. But you either have a deal or you don't.

Eloquently put my man.

A lot can change in 15 days, especially when he's a big piece of the team, so I wouldn't say unlikely is the right word. Memphis will get more and more desperate as October 31st comes closer, who knows what could happen.

Rudy's nothing special anyways.

I don't blame Rudy Gay for wanting to leave. Look at the management decisions Memphis has made, they have such a great core to work with in Gay, Mayo, and Thabeet, but they've messed it up by signing Zach Randolph and Allen Iverson. Zach is bad in the lockeroom for chemistry and Allen is bad on the court for chemistry.

Rudy would be a GREAT 3rd guy in a big 3. He has the potential to be a very good defensive player too. If he gets put into a good situation, watch out. Same goes for a lot of their young guys really. Theyve got a great core of individual talent, but the parts dont fit.

Gay is doing the right thing. There will be a lot of teams with a lot of cap space this summer.

I would love that.

Letting go of a great upcoming offensive center would be hard however.

Not a surprise. Rudy hasn't really gotten along with Mayo - and really hasn't made any strides to get along with him.

If I'm the Memphis coach / GM getting OJ Mayo more touches at the expense of Rudy Gay is a good thing. OJ is going to grow to be a very, very exciting player within the next couple of years, not to mention he's a much better facilitator on offense than Gay.

I would absolutely LOVE that trade.
Gay + Gasol for Bargnani.... but there is no way the Grizz would do that. Is there anyone we can throw in to make the deal more enticing?

same as the Bosh trades drawn up around here and it is Memphis
Gay won't resign, might as well get something
and Bargs comes at a reasonable price 5/50

Memphis has a lot of pieces that I like.. OJ Mayo + Rudy Gay + Marc Gasol.

If I were BC, I would try to make Memphis a trading partner.

Won't they still have a good shot at resigning him as a restricted FA?

Yeah Memphis is really the team we should be looking at to get us over the top.

They have 2 very very good wing players that are up for grabs and could get us over the top. Having Mayo or Gay in the lineup would make us contenders so long as we kept Bosh
