Grizzlies plan to re-sign Rudy Gay and Brewer, and negotiate with Randolph

If all of the "plans" listed in the article are accurate, then I have a couple of observations.

1 - Due to the potential cost of Gay, Brewer and Randolph, I'm further convinced a team could outbid the Grizz for Marc Gasol next summer. Again, that's assuming they manage to keep the other 3 as planned.

2 - It might be possible for Toronto to buy a 1st round pick from Memphis. Hiesley has been losing money. Re-signing Gay and Brewer will be costly.

Quote:
They still plan to take the best player available regardless of position during the June 24 draft.

They still plan to re-sign Rudy Gay and Ronnie Brewer during the free-agent period.

They still plan to negotiate with Zach Randolph regarding a contract extension.

They still are lecturing Randolph on being more careful about the company he keeps.

The Grizzlies are in the same mode of operation they employed a week ago before Randolph produced his latest double-double: mentions in two separate police reports in less than 24 hours.

Randolph was implicated in an Indianapolis drug investigation and Los Angeles-area strip club fight but the All-Star forward has avoided charges and arrest in both cases.

Yes, the Grizzlies are frustrated in the wake of this public relations hit. But to the question of whether Randolph's latest controversy will re-shape the Grizzlies' draft and/or free-agent strategy, the answer is no.

The organization finds Randolph's predicament disappointing but not at all detrimental to their offseason plans.

The issue of whether Randolph will receive a contract extension that will keep him in a Grizzlies uniform beyond this season remains centered on finances. Randolph's future hinges squarely on how much of a pay cut he's willing to accept.

In the meantime, the Griz will continue to look for shooting, backcourt help and ways to bolster their bench with Randolph wholeheartedly in their plans.
Grizzlies sticking to their script

I could see NYK going after Gay/Johnson if Lebron/Bosh aren't available.

No doubt in my mind that other teams go after Gay. The thing is, he is a restricted free agent. The Grizz can match any offer. Negotiations with Rudy collapsed last fall, but things have changed. Since so many teams have cap space, Rudy's "market value" has gone up. There are probably 2, maybe even 3, teams willing to give Rudy a max contract if they miss out on the better FAs. If Memphis wants to keep him, along with Brewer and Randolph, they need to open the piggy bank.

I agree and i don't think they'll match a max contract offer. Plus i don't think he's worth a max contract.

Well, Heisley is saying the right things. He claims he will match. Of course, it's possible that he's just bluffing to position for a S & T.

For the record, a non-bird rights max contract for a player who has been in the leauge fewer than 5 years is not quite as costly as the other prime free agents. If he signs a sheet with another team, Rudy's contact would start at around $13.1 million and go up by a little over $1 mill per year.

Heisley continues to insist that he is prepared to retain Gay at all costs.

"Rudy is going to be out there. But here's the No. 1 thing: The option on what we pay him is mine," Heisley said. "So when I say we're going to have Rudy next year, that's a pretty good indication that we're going to have him

I can totally see NYK offer him that max contract. And matching it is crazy.
