Default Greg Popovic on the term "World Champions"

I love him more each day.

Quote:
San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich has quietly evolved from a Stonehenge-like figure of oblique non-entity to a remarkably engaging, opinionated, relatively fascinating and often times hilarious coach who's unafraid to let you know what's on his mind. Perhaps most peculiar about Pop's more outspoken days is his selection of which issues to discuss. Early in the playoffs last year it was the over-the-top player introductions. Now, Popovich has turned his attention to championship terminology.

The San Antonio Express News reports that Popovich said to reporters on Tuesday night that he doesn't "know why they call (the NBA title) the World Championship."

""Did any of us who won a championship play anybody in Spain or Russia or Italy, or any other country, other than the United States?"

Just another example of an american ignorance - and their view of how the world seams to revolve around them. I've had numerous discussions with my american friends about this topic, but they just don't get it. And it doesn't surprise anybody.

The same goes for the "World Series"

As do you, the rest of the World needs to stop being sensitive, it's their league, they can call it the intergalatic universal championship if they want, who cares really? Fact is the best players in the world are here, so i kind of get it.

Teach them a lesson and make your own league that is better and call it the "Solar System Champions".... ignorant because they call it World Champions? I think it sounds good, your ignorant if you think someone is ignorant for such a silly thing.... but i guess broadstroking all Americans as ignorant is fashionable these days.

I agree. It's just their national league. It may be the best but nobody has given them the right to call it world. In football the Premiership or La Liga in Spain are the best. Are their champions world champions? And Champions League is the most prestigious tournament in the world in all sports. But the champion is just the European champion.Nothing more nothing less. There the FIFA Club World Cup and ather you win it you can be officially a world champion in football. In basketball there is no such thing and untill we find out something all teams will be national champions.
