Post Greece, the place where above average ballers go to be pampered like P.Diddy

We all remember what Josh Childress did last season, well get this:

Quote:
Apparently Olympiakos is targeting Nate Robinson with a boatload of cash (use your Google translator to read it). As they did a season ago with Josh Childress, the Greek team is hoping to sign Robinson as another ticket-seller, who would easily be a bigger star there.

According to the story -- loosely translated -- Olympiakos may also consider a run at Ramon Sessions, who is a restricted free agent with the Bucks.

European teams can sign restricted free agents from the NBA with no compensation. But the NBA team does maintain the player's rights.

The Knicks might actually have no problem with Robinson taking the Greek offer, mainly because not have to pay him and still could use him as a trade asset. Coincidentally, Robinson has been in Europe making appearances at basketball camps. He is an immensely-popular NBA player who might be the type to strike it rich in Europe as a fan attraction. But he is also the type that would likely prefer to remain in the NBA.

I hope they sign Robinson. I liked him in college but since hes entered the NBA hes been a complete douche and he made the dunk contest even worse([WIZARD ANNOUNCER]NOT POSSIBLE!!!!![/WIZARD ANNOUNCER])

Sessions is a really solid young PG, I hope he stays in the league. If MIL lets him go its a big mistake.

The Bucks need to make room somehow if they keep him. There isn't enough minutes to go around.

Greece is gorgeous... but Athens is a bit of a shithole.

I'd rather play in NYC if I was Nate. Once he goes off to Greece he will be forgotten. He's an energetic guy, and that's great and all, but he is still 5'9", can't defend, and is a bad shooter.

I just hate him for his attitude. The whole Dwight Howard (Superman)/Nate Robinson (Kryptonite) shit was so annoying, I've completely lost respect for both players since.

Lol... you say that now.

Have you ever been to the Greek Islands?

Would you rather be a role player in the NBA or a league-wide star in europe (with better pay)?

It's not such an easy decision.

People forget that these players have a lucrative career but it's not everlasting. If you know your big money-making days will be over by the time you're 30-something it's hard to turn down big bucks - especially if you're not playing for the championship.

In the case of NY players I can even see a sportive argument going for it. NY is shit but is looking to be good in 2010 and don't want to spend now because of it. Play one year or two overseas and re-sign with a improved Knicks-team may be more attractive than signing a big contract with a also-ran franchise.

I'm looking at it from this point of view. Every kid who likes basketballs dream is to play in the NBA. If I was given the chance to play in the best league in the world with the best players, I wouldn't want to give that chance up to go to Greece and play in a lesser league, even though I'd get more money.

I'm just thinking hypothetically of what I would do in the situation, you might be inclined to not believe me because of your own thoughts, but I think I would rather stay in the NBA :P

Sure I believe you and I agree totally, but it's not realisitc to put yourself in the position that they are in. I think they both probably stay, but still, there are other factors, also other than money.

I find it striking for instance that this off-season the three high profile free agents from the NBA finals teams haven't re-signed (Odom yet) with their old team. I think that's not only financially, but it has to do with personal matters too I think (speculative, I admit).

Imo Turkoglu didn't feel respected enough for his contributions, Ariza felt he deserved to be recognized for his crucial role on the championship winning team and Odom maybe feels the Lakers can't repeat without him. Only Turkoglu got a better offer from another team, so it wasn't just money.

That being said, although I feel the same way as you about wanting to win rather than to make millions is the attitude I would project having myself if I was so fortunate to be a professional athlete, but, I don't fault people who have a relative short window where they can reap the benefits of their talent for choosing financial security over the chance of that (ultimate) glory - which is by the way not exactly the choice for Robinson and Lee.

In this case, being in this weird place the Knicks are in, one year overseas could be a very smart move. Cash in, allow NYK to bring in big FA's (LeBron...? ++) and then re-sign both on their bird rights. If it works they could end up with a scary roster. Not very realistic but it's a shrewd option imo.

Yeah if Lee and Robinson do go over, the Knicks have a lot of cash for free agency next summer, they might quickly become contenders. Next summer is going to be so interesting as power shifts!
