Pacers Granger Named MIP

Quote:
Danny Granger of the Indiana Pacers is the winner of the 2008-09 NBA Most Improved Player Award presented by Kia Motors, the NBA announced today.

The annual award is presented to a player who has made a significant improvement from the previous season.

Granger received 364 of a possible 605 points, including 48 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.

The New jersey Nets' Devin Harris finished second with 339 points (43 first-place votes), followed by Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder with 83 points (six first-place votes).

Seemed like Harris was a lock for this. I thought Granger deserved this more so i think it's well deserved.

Why didn't he win last year? I mean he took more steps last year than he did this year. The MIP has just become, who has takenthat next step in their development rather than, who was a mediocre player and finally elevated his/her game.

Statistically, he elevated his game last season more than this season. But i've watched him for a while ( he's become one of my favorite non-raptors) and the difference in his game is pretty significant. Last year he was an immature offensive player with great range. If Dunleavy hadn't been next to him easing some of the pressure there's no way he would have up the stats he did last season. This season, he's learned how to get to the free throw line a lot more, learned how to create his own shot, and he's started to involve his teammates a lot more. And all this without anyone who you'd call a true second fiddle.

Thank you Zachus. He's the pure definition of a chucker.

Devin Harris was the one guy who really took off this year. There were glimpses of it last year, but on his own this season, he really took massive steps forward.

Are Melo and Joe Johnson chuckers as well? Because he only takes one more shot than both those guys yet still manages to shoot the ball a higher percentage. This is also disregarding the fact that a) his team plays at a higher pace than both of their teams and b) Granger has nowhere near the help that Melo and Johnson do.

I really don't know where this myth came from.

Harris didnt even show up a lot of games this year.

For a chucker, Id say 45% and 40% from 3 is pretty damn good. I'll take that kind of chucking any day especially where most of his shots come from. Harris, who takes more shots inside 18 feet by far, shot 44% so there you go.

When I say someone is a chucker (like AI or Joey Granger), these are the attributes I think of:

1. Not great moving the ball around; their role on the team revolves around getting the ball and putting it in the basket.
2. Poor shot selection; generates chances off of isolation and puts shots up no matter how they're defended.
3. The majority of their shots (as a result of #2) come from 15+ feet out.
4. Inconsistent.

He had a good season, but Granger needs to diversify his skillset a bit. I, too, think Harris should have won.

i dont agree with this choice or where this award is going.
how is granger improved? everyone already knew he was good, he was already a star... so what, he takes more shots this year (thus scores more points) and he is a shoe in for the 'most-improved' award?
it shouldnt work that way.
it should be given to guys who arent stars, who have to fight there way to get to the top and come out of nowhere to become someone. not a player who's already there or expected to be good.

The difference between Granger and the guys who are chuckers like Gordon and Iverson is most of Grangers shots come off of screens, and Id say 90^% of the time he doesnt hold the ball for more then 5 seconds. Most of his shots come from off ball screens or pick and roll plays. He really doesnt isolate all that much, nothing like the Gordons and AIs of the world. He may take too many shots sometimes but thats just because of Obriens system and their lack of a bigman in the middle, so theyre forced to win games with outside shooting and hes obviously the biggest part of that.

He isnt a ballstopper(ie dribbling nowhere for 5+ seconds) like the true chuckers of the world.

i dunno thrills...
i've seen plenty of Indy games this year where Granger pretty much ignores his entire team and jacks up ill advised shots with little remorse.
he has pretty much gone from a team-oriented type player to a geniuine ball hog in one year.
in his defense, he has been asked to do it all and he doesnt really have anyone else on his team who is an offensive dynamo, but he would jack up shots from anywhere...anytime.
why do you think he and Ford butted heads on more than one occasion? TJ isnt one to shy away from confrontation, and i'm sure he had a few words for Granger from time to time regarding his trigger hapiness.

yes, alot of his shots come off screens and pick and pops, but ive also seen him become a black hole where he'll take a shot just because.
he may not be called a ballstopper by definition, but when he gets that ball, be ready for a shot.... and thats a chucker if you ask me.

All these awards seem to be aimed at creating or rewarding stars now. I don't see how Nelson doesn't get more votes than Durant, or Granger in spite of the injury. Or how Harris doesn't win this thing. The spirit of these awards seems to be getting lost.

Hes been at 17 ppg the last 3 years. The only thing thats changed with him is hes on a great team and hes actually trying on defence now. That and the shots he makes actually mean something and hes shown that hes a road warrior which is hard to find.
