Wizards Gilbert Arenas signed for $111 Million with the Wiz

I Like Agent Zero...

Quote:
Gilbert Arenas has agreed to take less money to remain a member of the Washington Wizards, but he still will be far above comfortable on the financial front, the Associated Press is reporting.

"What can I do for my family with $127 million that I can't do with $111 million?" he told The Washington Post.

Arenas told the Post and the Washington Times on Thursday that he has agreed to re-sign for $111 million over six years, considerably less than the maximum deal he said the Wizards offered him when the free agency period began on Tuesday.

"I'm basically giving back $16 million," Arenas said. "This is in line with what I've been saying the whole time. You see players take max deals and they financially bind their teams. I don't wanna be one of those players and three years down the road your team is strapped and can't do anything about it."

Yeah, now the Wiz have an extra 3 mil to use a year! That can get them a really good player! Not.

Bad move. They were the only team really bidding on him and they overpaid. They should have looked to sign and trade him and gone in a different direction. All this does is keep them on the treadmill for another 5 years with him and Jamison locked up for eternity. Their trio is never going to do anything in the east.

It's pretty clear the Wizards front office cares much more about sustaining a money making playoff team with marketable stars year in and out, than actually winning anything. I feel sorry for Wiz fans, it's one thing to have a dumb GM, it's another to have an organization that doesn't care about you.

Oh well, at least they got Ovechkin

It's still too much money... he would be perfect as teams' #2 and for much less money but hey... good for him.

Thumbs down

So they pretty much have the same team that can't get out of the first round of the playoffs, three years running.Dumb move. They should have let him go,keep Jamison and Butler and add a pass first PG and maybe another scorer and they could have been more balanced. I don't think Gilbert will be the same player but he will demand the same touches. So as the team is currently constructed won't go far in the playoffs IMO.

yikes... how many teams were realistically in the market for him?
how many would have spent over a hundred million for his services?
washington overpaid large.... especially to a guy who sat out almost the entire season last year.
the only teams that could have afforded him this off season are (i dunno) philly, and few others, and they werent going to spend their bankroll on him... i dont even know if any teams were even targeting gilbert.
oh well, at least washington is in the east... they will build their team around a guy who is not a winner and will never be. he's only in it for himself IMO, that team will never be an elite team, ever.
Watch Jamison jump ship... i wouldnt blame him if he did.

they couldve gotten a lot more via a sign and trade IMO.

Jamison, Butler and Arenas is a pretty good core. They've got a good coach...

Don't sleep on these guys.

I'm certain they made sure his knee was in good shape before throwing that kind of money at him and he did stick to his word...

18 million for a 26 year old 30 point 6 assist a night guy is pretty decent in today's NBA and let's not forget when he's healthy, he's clutch with the game on the line.

That's a disgusting contract. Safe to say Arenas is a Wizard for life now at least.

Meh, theyve proven that they arent good enough to get to that next level. Unless Young turns into a star SG theyll continue to be one and done. They have a lot of solid role guys too but their big 3 just dont play enough defence, and IMO dont have enough chemistry. I'd love to see Butler on another team, hes a championship level player IMO. Same with Haywood.

th wiz sholdnt have signed him they played really good withput arenas last season and when he came back they started losing. the wiz are better with jamison and butler than with jamison butler and arenas because he takes half the shot and isnt too muchof a team player

Neither have Jose, Bosh or O'Neal.

You just contradicted yourself. You said they've proven they aren't good enough to get it done and then name two of their "championship level" players.

Not really, by championship level players I mean winners who play the right way and IMO can get it done when it matters(in their roles right now though, theyre being asked to do too much, on a championship level team I think theyd excel in lesser roles). Their big 3 as a whole isnt good enough to carry them anywhere. I'm just a fan of Butler and Haywood.

Well I hate Arenas, but I think he's a hell of a player and that they shouldn't be taken lightly. Jeez, they finished ahead of the Raps with Butler and Arenas out for most of the season.

I like Arenas, I just dont think that signing him for this much when no one else was offering him anything was a wise move because now they have all their money stuck with 2 players who havent gotten them, and may not get them past the first round. Jamison is a very good player but his defence is almost as bad as Boshs, same with Gilbert. The
guys around them, as solid as they are defensively, cant mask the pathetic defence of those 2 no matter what they do. I dont even think Tom thibodeau could save them.

They were better without Gilbert, yet they sign him forever even though they havent won anything with him. They probably could have gotten a decent package in a sign and trade and looked to go in a different direction I think too. Its bad management.

Yeah, the point remains that they played better without this guy because it allowed them to play more of a team game and play better defense. 18 mil/year for that?

Arenas is the most overrated player in the NBA.

I wouldn't sleep on the Wiz either, but I'd sleep on them less if they had spent that money on someone other than Gilbert, actually two good somebodies.

if i'm a WIZ fan, i'm on the fence with this signing.
on one hand, you re-sign a star player (supposedly in his prime - if his knee is OK), who can score loads of points, and will be an allstar for the next few seasons for sure.
on the other hand, you are paying a shit load of money to a guy who hasnt really done squat in his career other than score.

the wiz are throwing alot of money towards a guy who is the opposite of a leader. he's an "un-leader".
the amount of money in this deal is too high because its too much for an un-leader to make.
look at richard lewis, VC, etc. those guys are un-leaders.
sure they score plenty, but they are so one-dimensional and are the furthest things from leaders.
when you give guys like that such fat contracts, they almost always turn out to be busts, because those types of plyers do nothing for your team in the long run. they dont contribute to more wins, they actually bring the team down from the inside, because they cripple your future since they tie up so much of your bankroll.

Gilbert is the epitome of an 'un-leader'. the guy plays online poker during halftime... and while some of you guys thought it was hilarious and cool, if i'm a wiz fan i would despise it.
you mean to tell me that the guy with the biggest contract is playing on-line poker during halftime of a game..? what kind of example is that to the younger guys on the team? he doesnt even care really. and thats the guy who makes the most money? its a joke. you should pay the most money to the guy who's motivating the team when they are down, the guy who sets a good example and LEADS by example. not a player who doesnt even give a crap.

I'm also against this signing (if im a wiz fan) because the team played so much better last season when Gilbert was injured.
imagine the possibilities of doing a sign and trade with Gilbert.
the guy is a 30 point allstar scorer... he'd net you some big names or up and comers in return.
if they were smart, the'd have S&T'ed Gilbert with Chicago for Deng and Hinrich (and some other role players). and that isnt even the best deal they could get, but its the first ne to come to mind.

washington would have a lineup of:
Hinrich
Deng
Butler
Jamison
Haywood

now thats a team.

but instead they re-sign a 30 point scorer who couldnt lead a team to save his life.
