Wizards Gilbert Arenas charged with felony gun possession

Bye bye contract??

Quote:
Gilbert Arenas was charged Thursday with felony gun possession, a crime that carries a maximum five years in jail and a fine, authorities said.

The charge was filed Thursday afternoon by the U.S. Attorney's office for the District.

The U.S. Attorney's office alleged that on Dec. 21, Arenas "did carry, openly and concealed on or about his person, in a place other than his dwelling place, place of business or on other land possessed by him, a pistol, without license issued pursuant to law."

Arenas is currently on indefinite suspension by the NBA.

The Wizards issued the following statement to RealGM and other news outlets on Thursday:

"We are aware of the charge filed against Gilbert Arenas today and will continue to follow the on going legal process very carefully. We will also continue to cooperate fully with the proper authorities and the NBA. Beyond our previous statements on this serious and unfortunate matter, will have no further comment at this time.

Can they just void the contract if he's charged? If so, i'm gonna assume Arenas is gonna try and fight this (don't know if he can?), but this could get uglier!

I'm fairly certain that just being charged for a felony is grounds for the contract being voided, but I can't say for sure. Even if not guilty, I believe it falls under a sort of "morals" clause (ie. it reflects badly on the team or the NBA) that allows them to void the contract. What a save that would be for the Wizards.

They then would be able to unload Butler and or Jamieson for expirings and become players this summer in the FA market. Mind you who'd wanna go there with no Arenas/Butler/Jamison??

I think they would need one of Butler or Jamison to stay. Who will come to the Wizards for a chance to play with Brendan Haywood and Randy Foye? Right now they're looking at the 5th pick, and no one outside of John Wall at #1 looks to be a lock at the moment, so even this mess of a season is no guarantee of their future. They'll be in a heck of a toughspot, but at least they won't be paying Arenas $111 million over 6 years.

In this case we know he had actually had a gun, but what about if someone is charged for something they really had no part in? Wouldn't that be totally unfair to void the guys contract before the legal, judicial process even began?

I would assume any voiding of a contract would have to wait until the legal stuff was somewhat sorted out.

And it pisses me off that the wizards are getting off the hook so easily. They don't deserve to be so lucky.

Arenas Reaches Plea Deal

Gilbert Arenas has been charged with a felony gun possession that carries a maximum five-year sentence, but has reached a plea agreement that could result in much less or even no jail time, several sources close to the case said.

Arenas is scheduled to plead guilty Friday afternoon before D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin, who must decide Arenas's sentence.

He has been suspended indefinitely by the NBA, and it is unclear whether a felony conviction would give the Wizards the right to void the remaining four years of his six-year, $111 million contract.
