Default Gary Payton dropping truth bombs

Quote:
"Basically everything. It's no defense, it's just run and gun. To me, there's only three point guards in the NBA that impress me; I got Chris Paul, Rondo, and another kid that I like a lot and I forgot his name right now. Oh, and Tony Parker. That's only three NBA players in there.
There's too much touch fouls. Every time you touch and they stay on the free throw line. That's no way to watch basketball. When we were playing, it was rough and tough. Even superstars like me fouled out a lot. That's because they let people play, and if you do something then you call it. But nowadays it's not like that and this is the era.
This is what kids want to see. You see these Playstations, they scoring 50 and 60 with one player, that's what they want to see on TV and I don't go with that. My era, give me one-on-one with somebody and stop him and right now you can't do that with a player because if you touch him he's going to the foul line and you're fouling out. Let him be rough. If he got an opportunity to go at you in the offensive end, let me go at him on the defensive end and rough him up. So that's the way I like basketball and I don't think it's like that.

Not sure. I got it from one of the posters on the Spurs forum but there was no link.

I agree with that quote. NBA is incredibly soft.

It's precisely why a very good defender on the perimeter, like Ross can be, is potentially more valuable than a Drummond. It is precisely why I would think hard about taking Avery Bradley over Cousins. It is why MKG is so critical to any success the Cats have. It is why it is so important for Lowry not to gamble on defense. The effect has been to tilt the game towards the perimeter. And the ability to crowd the lane balances things out a bit, but further effects the kinds of roles bigs can play within offenses. And defenses for that matter - stopping the ball on the perimeter is like gold now, and without it a single strong defensive big gets neutralized too easily.

Ball movement never went anywhere. It's always been part of basketball.

It's always been a part of playing the right way, but it's hardly the way the bulk of the league has played for many years. Team offense has only supplanted individual offense as the Thibs defense has become more entrenched. Stopping the ball early and taking away a lot of straight up pick and roll, means there has to be more options exercised for anything to get done. Executing and spacing are pretty essential, and even now that requires a good mix with vets.

This guy needs to stop while he's ahead.....

Gary Payton Calls Chris Paul No. 1 Point Guard, Takes Dig at Stephen Curry | Bleacher Report

Quote:
Gary Payton is really starting to give off an old-man-yelling-at-clouds vibe.

Since officially entering the Hall of Fame, Payton hasn't passed up an opportunity to eviscerate NBA point guards not named Chris Paul, Tony Parker or Rajon Rondo. In the past, though, he's neglected to name names, opting to criticize the rest of the field in general instead.

Not anymore.
Quote:
In a video posted by TMZ, Payton took some not-so-subtle shots at Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook, essentially claiming they play a different position.

"You got shooting guards now that's playing point guard," he said. "Steph Curry, Westbrook—all them. They own that."

Is that A-OK with you, Gary?

Apparently not.

"But you know what? I'm the Hall of Famer, so you gotta ride with that," he reminded us. "They don't work with me. When they get to my level, then they can talk to me."

All right then.
Quote:
Someone better remind Westbrook and Curry they're not allowed to address Payton directly, because they're neither Hall of Famers nor actual point guards. The NBA barely has any real point guards apparently. According to Payton, there are only three.

"There's only one or two or three [real point guards]," he explained. "I say Tony Parker, Rondo and Chris Paul. They're the only three true point guards."

If only the true-point-guard love fest stopped there.

It didn't.

"Chris Paul is the No. 1 point guard in the NBA right now," Payton said, as if that was brand-new information.

Good to know that retirement and a Hall of Fame induction hasn't humbled Payton. He's still the same self-assured and candid sound bite he's always been. And if past behavior is any indication, he's never going to change.

Some good points, but c'mon Cousins is infinitely better than Avery Bradley...

I would agree that 10yrs-20yrs both Currey and Westbrook would have been considered as SG. The rest? His is just full of himself after becoming a HOF.
