Talking Ever wonder just how good NBA players are? Brian "White Mamba" Scalabrine shows you..

Quote:
Over 11 NBA seasons, journeyman forward Brian Scalabrine cultivated an image of a regular guy who just happened to play basketball. Eventually, many fans came to believe that Scalabrine was an Average Joe, not an elite athlete (as all NBA players are), and figured that he probably wasn't that great at the profession that earned him tens of millions of dollars. This summer, Scalabrine said that he resented this suggestion (even if he also heartily embraced the regular guy image), and in December he challenged any Boston-area amateur basketball players to games of one-on-one.
On Monday, Scalabrine faced four hand-picked competitors. He destroyed them all.

Scalabrine — who spent the last few seasons of his career seen as the “human victory cigar” — easily defeated all four of his opponents, throwing down monstrous jams and sinking smooth jumpers as he beat them all by a combined score of 44-6.

That link also features a 30-minute video of the action, and it becomes very clear very quickly that Scalabrine is on another level from these athletes. Even against decent competition — the first challenger, Matt Tomaszewski, was on Syracuse's roster just last season — Scalabrine owned everyone. The second and third games were both shutouts, and the six points scored included one two-pointer. In four games, Scalabrine conceded just five baskets.

Brian Scalabrine dominated the competition in Boston one-on-one challenge | Ball Don't Lie - Yahoo! Sports
Here's Scal against one competitior who actually played for Syracuse not too long ago.

Who here thinks they could take him?

Of course he will kill these random scrubs. Even the worst NBA players are amazing players who could destroy anyone. They spend their lives playing basketball training at the highest level on the planet. I'm sure he was laughing at these other guys who challenge him and all the amateurish mistakes they were making. The reason he cultivated that "regular guy" image is not because he's bad, but because he's a goofy-looking ginger and most of the NBA players don't look like that.

Yeah. The goofy ginger look was also why I think a lot of people enjoyed laughing at him and making the sarcastic jokes about his MVP ability. Some people, even on this board, took it the wrong way and interpreted it as "reverse racism", asking "why is it okay to make fun of a white guy?" But I don't think most people were laughing at him specifically because he was white; it's because he was so fucking goofy and unathletic looking, from the ginger hair to the slight bitch-tits. That, and he was a big talker for such a bench warmer.

One of the greatest NBA personalities of all-time, for good and bad reasons.

I wouldn't doubt that.... but we're not talking about upper echelon D1 or HS players.... we're talking about avg. joes and "weekend warriors" who were talking junk to him.

are you guys effing kidding me?????????

ugh. People here still don't get it do they. Top HS guy could beat him? Really? Not a fucking chance in hell would they. He's an 11 year NBA player who was starter quality for many of those. Maybe if they were guards and small, then maybe, but a guy, like him, wow.

This is what gets my goat sometimes. The sheer disconnect people have between what they believe to be real, and what really is.

I love the Scallenge. I proves what it should.

Some people just don't learn. Even a top NCAA prospect would have trouble beating him. If he was in high school or NCAA, he'd be putting up stupid numbers. You don't last 11 years without being able to ball.

exactly, he also know how to play strong, and mean and hard. You can't learn that anywhere but at the top level.

Sure there might be the odd soon to be Lebron that can take him, bu that isnt a fair comparison.

i remember reading an article approximately 15 years ago when all the basketball hype was going to these rucker park and1 street ballers. all these people were busy talking about how they're better than this NBA player, better than that NBA player. anyways, the article went on to say that steve kerr, a one dimensional three point shooter, went there and absolutely made everyone looks like a fool. it was pretty funny to read it considering how high up everyone held these players and their mix tapes, and how slow and white steve kerr was perceived to be.

This. A Wiggins or Lebron is such a rarity. When someone says "A high school kid" even if an elite one, they don't think of a Wiggins. He is like top
.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 01% and already an NBA level talent. Wiggins is not really a high school kid. The only thing keeping him out of the NBA is a rule.

When you say upper echelon high school kid, I believe most would think of a player that is competing for a college scholarship, in general. Because only a small percentage of high school players even get that far.

If you mean a Wiggins type, you should be more specific. Scal crushed the guy who made the Syracuse roster. And, at one point in his life, that guy was an amazing high school player. You don't make the Syracuse roster without destroying high school competition.

...and BS absolutely tooled him. My buddy and I went out last night, I played ball with him in College, I told him about the Scallenge, and the posts here and he chuckled. He brought up a point I hadn't. He simply said, "do the guy on your message board not realize that for 11 year he has played, and practiced against the absolute best players in the world?"

He's right. BS has been battling Garnett everyday for quite a while. He was also pretty good at his peak. How he hell do people think some guy from the YMCA has a chance.

I have played against wha I thought were juggernauts. Played against and hag to Guard the Newton brothers, Tom being a standout at the CIAU level, his brother starting for Duke. Pete, Guarasci played for team canada, played him too, the three of those long bastards played at Anne Meyer. I have played pick up against a retired Laker Mike Smrek. Fuck. NONE of these guys had even close to the career that BS has had. Let me tell you how untouchable these guys were.... shit, Smrek was in his 40's and he dunked all over all of us and we all played to the college level.

the space between NBA player and "kinda good baller" is much bigger than people think. When you're busy busting on players, and WE ALL DO IT, keep this in mind. These guys have sits with more talent than us, and those same shits are likely smarter too.

All the same, wasn't the guy extremely overpaid for a player that only played garbage time?

And he did have man-boobs.
