Heat's Pittman, Haslem suspended for flagrant fouls
Posted May 23 2012 6:45PM

NEW YORK -- Miami Heat center Dexter Pittman has been suspended three games without pay for striking the neck and shoulders of Indiana guard Lance Stephenson, and Miami forward Udonis Haslem has been suspended one game without pay for striking the head and shoulders of Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough, it was announced Wednesday by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

Both Pittman and Haslem had their Flagrant Foul Ones upgraded to Flagrant Foul Twos, as did Indiana's Hansbrough, who struck the head of Miami's Dwyane Wade on a foul that occurred shortly before Haslem's foul.

The incidents occurred during the Heat's 115-83 victory over the Pacers on May 22 at AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami.

Haslem will serve his suspension on Thursday when the Pacers host the Heat in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series. Pittman will begin serving his suspension in Game 6.

I completely agree with you and I don't advocate that kind of play - it happens with men that play with fire/intensity. The minor suspensions show that the reactions of some are excessive on this board. All 3 get upgrades so the league can send their message. I'm sure minor compared to the private messages sent to the teams by Stern.

I assume I qualify here? This is exactly what I asked for. His foul broke a written rule and crossed the line of a hard play into a dirty cheap shot. He should have been tossed out, now he'll miss one game. I'm not asking for the guy to be banned from the league. The league shouldn't have to correct the ref's mistakes. Pittman I still think deserved more.

I'm glad that NBA didnt agree with you, but upgraded those fouls to flagrant 2's and gave suspensions.

And have you ever watched Euroleague? You seem to think they have different rules, but they are pretty much the same for this case. Intentionally hitting someone in a head as a retribution is not just a good hard foul. Its not part of basketball (NBA, euroleague or any other league) and thats why according to rules you should get ejected.

Who said I want hits like that as part of basketball? I'm just laughing at the extent of the over reaction by some posters here. Shit happens in the heat of the game especially in playoffs. It's more of a big deal to fans than it was to the players - with the exception of Pittman which was a blatant hit from the moment those 2 players walked onto the floor. All 3 being upgraded to a 2 is nothing more than a PR move and quite frankly the league might have sealed the Pacers fate for the next game as losing Tyler after possibly losing Granger and West to ankle injuries will hurt more than the heat losing Haslem for 1 game and Pittman for 3.

I wonder if we'll see Curry hit the floor now.

I dont know what are you referring to as over reaction. Most people here just said Haslem and Pittman deserve a suspension. NBA seemed to agree.

And yes shit happens. People over react and if they do something dangerous in heat of the moment they are punished so maybe next time they think twice. I dont see any one here asking for Haslem or Pittman to be punished more than suspensions and fines, which both are standard punishments for those kind of flagrant.

Also I dont think Tyler got suspended (rightfully so) so I think it might hurt Pacers mostly because now LeBron and Wade might be focused on showing they can win without one decent big man on the roster.

What the hell is wrong with Vogel? Playing his entire bench in game 5 vs Miamis 2 big at the start of the 2nd turned in to the exact same scenario. He needs to keep 2 of West/Hibbert/Granger on the court at all times and cut down his garbage rotation

If the Pacers lose this game Vogel should be fired for his continued horrible adjustments. THE HEAT ARE LEAVING WADE AND LEBRON IN AT THE START OF THE 2ND AND 4TH. Realize it. They already crushed you last game for leaving your entire bench in for long periods and still he doesnt adjust. Then he doesnt call a timeout until theyre 4 down. Just downright awful coaching

Just keep pounding it inside and keeping Barbosa off the floor, Vogel. And dont ever play the bench lineup ever again. Ever.

Not surprising considering the refs let the last game get away from them.
