Talking Dwight Rips Orlando Magic, Denies Beef with Kobe

Quote:
D12 believes that he’s been unfairly portrayed as a “coach killer” and person who “doesn’t really love basketball,” but said he’s not going to go out and defend every single negative story that comes out concerning him.
Quote:
Dwight cited an example of his time with the Orlando Magic, admitting that it was a team full of players “nobody wanted,” but he led them with a smile on his face.

When asked what “rock bottom” was, the star spoke on how he heard opinions about how he faked his back injury toward the end of the 2011-12 season and how he wasn’t a tough enough competitor.

In the second portion of Leahy’s interview, she inquired about a recent Adidas spot featuring D12 in full Lakers garb and stating that he is all-in for L.A.
Quote:
Howard went on to answer some questions about his complicated relationship in the media with the Black Mamba, saying most of the stories leaked to the press aren’t true.
Quote:
Superman flat-out denied that he and Bryant ever fought and made it clear that the two have never come to blows or even shouted at one another. At the conclusion of the interview, Dwight noted that there’s still a chance he could walk away in free agency—mentioning that, ultimately, it is his career and he has to do what is best for himself.

Wow, he just keeps topping himself. Next he's going to publicly go after Kobe while still on the team, and get run out of LA before the season ends. Seems like this is where its going.

What a dick.

I don't think he's ripping anyone. Remember, Dwight got both SVG and the Magic's GM fired so he must have known what possible moves were available. Since he really did have knowledge of whether or not anyone wanted Magic players then clearly no one wanted them (except Reddick).

More fuel on the fire
Dwight Howard and Phil Jackson have been texting - CBSSports.com

Quote:
When Phil Jackson did not get the Lakers job, a number of people were upset. The media, most especially, as Jackson is a reporter's dream. Pau Gasol, second, because he wants things to magically be like they were in 2010 again. The fans, third, because you can count the rings. And Dwight Howard quietly expressed a bit of disappointment. Jackson is beloved by players and the kind of coach Howard likely has always wanted to play for.

You know, one who won't actually demand much from him.

Jackson takes a hands-off approach with his players, especially his stars, believing much more in letting things work themselves out. The triangle offense would feed the post, where Howard (mistakenly) thinks his game is strongest. So when that didn't happen, Howard put on a good face but did express some disappointment.

And apparently his desire for a connection to the Zenmaster lingered. From ESPN LA:

"I've had people really just help me out," Howard said. "Guys like Phil [Jackson], he texts me and he understands how it is to come off back surgery. He just said it takes a full year to recover, so you can't beat yourself up over the things that have happened this year."

via Dave McMenamins post on LA Lakers | Latest updates on Sulia.

Well, that's awfully nice of Phil. To reach out and help a younger player dealing with a similar condition he went through, that's great.

But that's also a would-be coach texting with the player he would have coached. There have been a lot of rumblings that Howard doesn't like Mike D'Antoni, to the point that some think D'Antoni is an obstacle to Howard re-signing in L.A.

This isn't a big deal, but it's worth noting. Jackson has said publicly he doesn't want to coach again, and it's almost impsosible to see Jackson being willing to come back and help the Lakers, just as it's unlikely the team would pay off D'Antoni on top of Mike Brown to go away. But it's one more way Jackson remains relevant, and just as much so, it shows Howard seeking out the people who will support him no matter what, and not throw any of the criticism he seems to reject so plainly his way.
