Dunk contest regresses...

After last year's 'resurgence' of the dunk in which a truly entertaining but still physically awe inspiring performance was given by at least one of the league's young stars..this year's show was boring. I've thought in recent years too much attention was paid to props and not enough to dunking. I dont' mind Howard wearing a cape while he does something astounding but when the prop becomes the dunk, like the cupcake charade by Green...the line has been crossed.

Well from what I saw, while i could stand it this year...things have gotten worse, and I found someone that agrees with me :)

"Dunk Contest Death Knell: I can't explain what made Saturday's dunk contest so singularly dull. Maybe it was the fact that, from the beginning, all anyone wanted to talk about was Dwight Howard's pre-ordained victory. Maybe I'm sick of Nate Robinson getting scored on a curve because he's short (as Howard is sometimes, because he's tall). Maybe the props are too campy, and the required teammate participation too often turns it into a passing contest.

Or maybe it was that, when Howard finally got a chance to dunk on a 12-foot rim—a much-hyped plan that the NBA refused to allow in 2007—the result was decidely anticlimactic. Or that on two dunks, Robinson used some form of human vault.

Last year was hailed as a triumph for Howard and the NBA, but in retrospect it mostly just served as a marketing tool for the Magic superstar. Too much "imagination" and paegantry takes the event miles away from the raw act of dunking; handicapping for the very big and very small has reached the point where one friend suggested only swingmen be allowed to participate. This year, we saw a cartoon starring two of the league's biggest goofballs: an impromptu sneaker ad for the two of them, rock bottom as far as competition and intensity are concerned.

That might be why LeBron James tentatively agreed to throw his name into the hat for 2010: He can ham it up with the best of them, but more important, LeBron could truly save the contest by bringing it back to its roots. James throwing down a tomahawk on a raised goal (that's one prop I don't mind) would cause outright pandemonium."

I hate Nate Robinson ... usually I like the "little" guys standing up against the big guy, but Nate is an asshole, a big big asshole. :dead:

i can agree. This years was so dull. There was no 360's no threw the legs of any kind. After watching some of the past dunk comps, like 2000 (playing all day on raps tv) i feel sad that the dunk contest has come to what it is. Cant these guys get a little creative? I saw a sprite slam dunk contest at teh acc during half time and this one guy was amazing, he did some shit i have never seen before.

Its time for these guys to step their games up. Remember when carter had 4 new dunks in 2000, all it takes is a little creativity and the dunk contest could actually be fun to watch again .

How many times does this guy need to be in it anyways? He won in 2006, was there in 07, then lost, was there again in 08 lost, there again in 07 and won. Dam i hope howard is not at the slam dunk again next year, cause the superman shit is getting old and boring.

Oh and last year, howards winning dunk, was not a dunk. Thats how pathetic that NBA has gotten wit hthis comp

I don't like Nate but I rather him win over D12.Also, I agree the Dunk Comp sucks now

Wiseguy 02-16-2009 05:10 PM

dwight got too carried away with the whole superman thing
last year he actually had two really good dunks- the ones with no gimmicks
this year was ridiculous
nate's dunk jumping off the guy's back was terrible
i mean, if yoiur going to that, you might as well just use a trampoline
for me it was far and away the worst part of the night
next year i say the nba puts in powerful dunkers who finish with authority
vince, lebron, jrich
get rid of this campy bullsh!t

Boshinator_ 02-16-2009 05:25 PM

NBA...where rigged shit happens.

Get this dude and James White and the next dunk contest would easily surpass 2010

nate is incredible. noone can trash talk nate. You can't dunk a 10 foot, and nate's 5"8??

his props were weak this year but he can fill it, why shouldn't he be scored higher for being short? getting up is what it's all about, EDITED

i thought the dunk contest was pretty good.

(outside of the judging).

Rudy says "If I put on a Spain jersey and I dunk in Dwight Howard's face they give me a 50,"

the dunk comp was ok.... i dont think it sucked at all.
it was better than previous competitions in the past, thats for sure.
D12 was a bit too gimmicky and ran out of gas (hype) by the end. Nate robinsons dunk over D12 was solid (think about how hard that is - dunking over a 7 footer, catching the ball in mid air and hammering it down. my only problem with Nate is that anytime he's on camera he cant keep his mouth closed. he's always talking some shit and wont shut up.

IMO, the 3 point shoot out was lame.....
the dunk judging was bad.....
and the commentating was horrendous.....
i can honestly say that listening to Kenny 'the jet' Smith yap all night long ruined the entire evening for me. his ignorance and stupidity was over the top and pure nonsense.
then you have Cheryl Miller in there (god knows why), she is a big moron who cant even pronunciate whatsoever and looks and acts like an ogre. add in her brother (reggie) who feels it his duty to bring up his nba past ever time he opens his mouth.
sigh......

they need to can all of those fools.

Dunk contest was okay. D12 dunking on the 12-foot net would have been better if there was some flair to it, but it just looked like a putback jam.

Nate deserved the award. At least it had some sort of pizzazz to it.
