Pistons Drummond one of the most efficient rookies EVER?

Quote:

When Drummond plays, the 19-year-old rookie is efficient, maybe even at an all-time level when compared to other NBA teenagers.

ESPN.com's Tom Haberstroh notes Drummond has a player efficiency rating (PER) of 21.9, which would be the highest of any NBA teenager in history if he keeps it up.

Better than Kyrie Irving. Or Kobe Bryant. Or even LeBron James.

In less than 20 minutes a game, Drummond is averaging 7.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Projected over 36 minutes a night, Drummond's averages would be 13 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.

ESPN's Kevin Pelton uses player stats, and height and weight, to identify predecessors to players at the same age. Drummond's comparison? Dwight Howard.

I really hope that DET gives this kid the chance to start some games after the all-star break. I REALLY want to see what he can do in 30+ min/gm.

He'll get fouled a lot, miss most of his free throws and get yanked cause he would be a bigger liability than Howard or Shaq.

Personally, I really hope he learns to improve his ft% a la Malone (probably the only big I've seen to go from horrendous to very good). If not he'll be riding the pine still, especially in the 4th. I've been a tad hard on the fellow for that and I really hope he can improve or we may never get to see his true potential.

Malone was actually the exception rather than the rule....

A LOT of great bigs struggled with their FTs over the years (Duncan, Webber, Shaq, Griffin & DJ in L.A.) yet still helped their team WAY more than they hurt them.

If DET is that worried about it they can just play him in the 1st three Q's and then sit him for most of the 4th.

Probably will happen that way, Hack-a-Drummond - never did like that rule change by the league to slow Shaq. Drummond though....39% FT%....don't think any of those bigs you mentioned were that bad. The league should really change the rule back so it reduces the fouls late in games, would be more exciting imo.

Oh he's horrid without a doubt.... but like I said... if he's not playing in the 4th it won't be much of an issue. Teams aren't going to want to get into the penalty quickly during most of the game.

Good for the regular season, but could that work effectively in the playoffs? Especially if Detroit needs rebounds, blocks and defense, might totally negate the net result.

How much does a PER mean if you're getting less than 30 minutes a game? There's just no way you can compare him to Lebron or Dwight.

I'd like to know when Griffin and DJ became "great bigs" worthy of mention in the same breath as Shaq, Duncan and Webber?

No, toraps mentioned Griffin and Jordan's free throws. They didn't exactly win a ton with them missing freethrows either.

Howard's not close to those guys.

Who cares the guy is taking three maybe four attempts a game, and every thing is a dunk.

Seems the hacking is not limited to the 4th anymore. When Drummond becomes more of a focal point for the team then other teams will change their tactics - then he'll be fouled, and fouled a lot, before he gets the ball.

True. But you wouldn't expect him to be THAT bad a FT shooter forever.

If he get to around 60% that'll prob. be good enough.

And they played a lot more minutes yo, so their PER would mean something quite different. Apples and oranges really.

Wow this Drummond guy must be the most efficient ever!!! Mostly based on the fact he was drafted directly after Ross.

Look at these stats,

24.6 MPG

0.576 FG%

0.000

0.555 FT%

2.6 OFF

4.5 DEF

7.1 REBS

0.6 APG

0.6 SPG

1.0 BPG

0.74 TO

2.82 PF

7.7 PPG

Oh yeah, that's Ed Davis' rookie season. Toronto fans are a little too in love with Drummond. He brings physicality, and a nack for rebounding, but is he really that much better for this team than a guy we already have. Surely their rookie numbers wouldn't scream that.

If DET came to me and offered us Drummond for Ed I'd pack Ed's bags and drive him to Motor City myself.

Ed will be a solid big.

Drummond will be a true game-changer. His sheer size and athleticism puts him in class with guys like Cousins and Howard. Good rebounder and shot-blocker and even has a nice passing touch too.

The hype is well-warranted.

Id do that deal faster than dealing JC. I think that if Drummond hit around that 60% mark on FT's in college he would've gone top 3 IMO.

It's stupid to suggest he's going to be better than LeBron, Kobe or Kyrie, but he's going to be a helluva player. It's almost guaranteed he'll be better than Ross. BC fucked up in not taking him. Shouldn't blame Ross though, it's BC's fault.
