I recently had a discussion with the creator of this blog, about the effects of coaching on a team. VDZ wasnít convinced that coaching had all that much to do with a teamís fortunes in the NBA. I agreed that the NBA, unlike many different sports in the world, was player-driven, where the teams with the best players, in virtually all cases, were the best teams in the league. Kobe, Pau Gasol and Odom on the Lakers? Championship. Phil Jackson (one of the greatest, if not the greatest coach of all time) tried and failed to make Kobe plus a bunch of scrubs successful in the mid-2000s. Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen? Championship, and that was with oft-disrespected Doc Rivers at the helm. The year before that, they were one of the worst teams in the league.

Coaching doesn't hurt, but I think you could easily have teams with player-coaches like with Russell and Wilkens, and go all the way, if it was the right team.

My view is that the biggest concern is having coaches, players, and management all sharing the same sense of how to win and engage together in a process to do so.

Coaching DOES matter. Sure, anyone can have a winning season with KG, Allen and Pierce but we as Raptors fans should know that you can have talent go to waste if you don't have someone on the bench making the right calls and managing the players the right way.

I am of the belief that coaching will be the most critical thing for the Raptors this season. The raw talent, depth and versitility is all there and now they need someone to take all that and create something out of it. Jay is the painter, the win/loss record is the canvas and Bosh & company are the paints. This isn't paint by numbers, there are no directions and its time for Jay to show whether he's capable of creating something memorable, that he's not just a painter but an artist.

Or worse. There are worse coaches out there than Sam. Sam is in the middle of the pack.

It does matter. Just look at what Larry Brown did with the Bobcats. He took them to a near playoff team within a couple of months.

Coaching is over rated. The players know their game, and how to deliver. All the coach can do is hinder the players, and tell them what they already know. I like nut job coaches like Van Gundy, they can make the players want it more i suppose. I'm on the fence

Larry Brown did a great job with the Knicks didn't he?

People that look at coaching as a magic elixir will never get what is actually needed for success.
