The Lakers are only 2.5 games out of 8th spot, with Nash only playing two regular season games this year. If you take a look at the Western Conference Standings, 4-5 teams will make the playoffs guaranteed, in no particular order:
1. OKC 2. Spurs 3. Memphis 4. Clippers 5. Golden State Warriors (not guaranteed yet, but close to) Dallas is likely to be in given their 500 play without Dirk. He's expected to join the team shortly. That leaves 7 following teams fighting for 3 spots left (6,7,8): Dallas (Dirk's coming back) Minnesotta (Love's back) Utah Denver Houston Portland Lakers Do you think the Lakers make it to the playoffs? |

There's no way they miss the playoffs. Kobe won't let it happen. Talent can't buy you a championship, but it can buy you playoffs. They'll probably climb top 4.
And I don't mean Raptors "talent". I mean Frickin' Kobe, D12, Pau and Nash. |

They have a really tough schedule coming up and Kobe is already starting to break down. They have old talent. And Dwight, who has no heart, no brain and will be a big distraction again. I wouldn't bet on them not making it, but I definitely wouldn't bet on them making t either.

Unless Denver suffers injuries to key players, I'd count them in for sure. By staying at .500, the Nuggets did a good job of surviving a very difficult part of their schedule. Only 7 of their first 24 games were at home, so they've got 10 extra home games coming. And Denver is a solid home team.
And, yeah, I agree that the Warriors are almost a certain lock too, despite having missed the playoffs for so long. They are winning a lot on the road, and that's what playoff teams do. It's in part because they have good bench pieces. That helps down the stretch. |

it will be interesting to see how Rubio does and what impact he has on the T-Wolves. Minny has such a solid frontcourt right now. If Rubio bolsters the backcourt and they start climbing further above .500, the Lakers won't catch them. It will be the Lakers, Utah and Dallas fighting for 8th.

Minnesotas improvement will be huge with Rubio in the lineup. I think the key for them is their outside shooting. They should really be looking to acquire a solid shooting starting SG before the deadline, so they can keep their bench in tact. They have some pieces they can move too(Ridnour/Barea, Williams), without really hurting their bench. If they get a starting SG, they'll still have Barea or Ridnour, Shved, Howard, Cunningham, and Stiemsma off their bench. Theyre a shoe in for the playoffs unless injuries happen again. I really like their team.
The Lakers will make the playoffs. I have no doubts. |

The Lakers have too much talent not to make the playoffs. Nash is going to help them get better. However, I wouldn't be surpirsed if they're in the outside looking in late into the season. The West is still very tough. No way the'yre winning a championship with their current roster and defense.

Normally I would say it is way too early to pencil them in, but, aside from injuries, I cannot see them falling. They are not just winning. They are winning on the road....a lot. They just won their 10th road game by pounding Atlanta. Teams that miss the playoffs don't win so often and so convincinly on the road. Injuries are the only thing I can see that could cause GS to miss the playoffs.
