Knicks The disappearing man: Amare Stoudemire

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to post some topics on players who are on the rise and on the decline... and we can discuss the reasons for their ups/downs.

lets begin this topic with Amare Stoudemire.

Last year at this time, he was the 'man' in NY. averaging over 25 ppg, 9 rebs.... he had the Knicks looking like an actual contender.
he put together that string of games scoring 30+ in over 10 games in a row (or something like that).
He was relishing his status as the best PF in the league, and he really was the best PF at that time, without a doubt.

Fast forward to 2012 and Amare is putting up 17/8... shooting a miserable 42% while his team is under .500, and struggling.

He looks frustrated, passionless, and a shell of his former self.
Looking at this years stats, he wouldnt even be considered top 5 PF...
What is happening to this guy? and is it fixable?

discuss.

That team needs a coaching change, like yesterday. Oh, and a PG. lol

They all look lost, and they're all chuckers. Even when 3's aren't dropping they chuck them at an unbelievable rate. They need defensive direction and and an overall system. Right now it's as if it's all freelance all the time.

Look at the whole picture. Last year, he was a big focus in the offense, and especially before Carmelo, he got the ball in a lot of "his" spots.

This year, they've got Carmelo posting up or isolating in his area, which overlaps with Stoudemire. They have Chandler who finishes around the basket but doesn't add any space to an offense. They have no real distributor on the team at all. Stoudemire's downturn has as much to do with his teammates as his greatest successes do.

Amare/Melo can't co-exist. They need to trade one of them for a big time PG.

I think melo for d.will would solve the problem, amare got the big contract from setting picks for nash, get him a pg

NY should never have chased Carmelo.... Amare was larger than life for them.... They went after the wrong stud. It's fixable but Carmelo is going to have to settle down.

the knicks just never learn. they always think short term and never long term. whoever is a big free agent currently, they want to get him, which no regard to the future or team chemistry. we saw how long it took them to recover from the marbury, curry, etc years. finally they have a clean slate and acquire amare. thats fine, thats a good start right there. now u do ur best to build around amare. the trade for melo was totally pointless. they let go of some good assets when melo was likely gonna sign with them in the offseason regardless. and even signing melo wouldn't have been a good idea. once again, the knicks is all about now now now. couldn't even wait half a season.
and again, knicks just go after who's the hottest on the block right now and care about team chemistry later. at the time it was melo. this offseason it was chandler. who's the hottest, the knicks gotta have it. the team chemistry is horrible and melo, amare and chandler is the worst combo of big 3 in the history of big 3s, in whichever way you look at it.
at the start you need to accumulate assets then figure out a direction you want to go and get players that can go along with ur assets. the knicks are all about getting assets all the time, throw them all together and form a team.

in conclusion, thats why amare was good prior to melo coming and then even worse now with the addition of chandler. they're repeating the same mistakes that took team years and years to recover from.

giving up Gallo has hurt them, but chasing Chandler was a mistake. Chauncey is so underrated. Amare needs a PG and with a semi-competent one is a top 5 PF without question. There are only two I would take ahead of him in win now mode and that's Dirk and Lamarcus.

I never thought that highly of him. He's a bit of a one trick pony that needs to be set up just so to be able to get things done. I remember how he wanted to emulate McHale when he came into the league. He ended up down a very different path, and that's a shame. Not that he hasn't had his moments, but he doesn't make anyone better - he needs someone else to make him better in something of an all-or-nothing fashion.

The Knicks GM needs to watch "Moneyball" as they traded away their entire roster for basically 1 guy who can't coexist with Amar'e. They are doomed to fail.

D'Antoni got fired

Donnie Walsh is a moron, why the hell would you trade your roster for a egotistical, self-centred chucker? Good for him, it's good foooor him.

Agreed 100%. He's definitely an explosive offensive player but not nearly as good as he thinks he is.

This is why you don't always go out and get the "best player available" without considering the entire picture. Trading for Melo was a HUGE mistake.... esp. when you consider how Gallo is playing right now. Too bad. The Knicks actually seemed to be on the cusp of getting things right after years of fuck-ups.

obviously Dwight Howard >> Amare + Chandler, but this is an isolated scenario
specificaly to NYK situation who they are going to play as their 4 and sub 4 and 5? Jeffries? Harrellson? Balkman? this is ridiculous.

Amare is a PNR guy. With Melo isolating in the post 24/7 and Chandler setting picks and clogging the lane most of the time there isn't much room for Amare to operate. Not having a PG doesn't help him either.
