Derrick Favors signs a 4yr/49mil extension

Quote:
The Utah Jazz made their commitment to Derrick Favors clear this offseason when they allowed Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson to walk in free agency. Now they've made that commitment even clearer by reaching a long-term financial agreement with their burgeoning star.

League sources told Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski that the Jazz and Favors have reached an agreement on a four-year, $49 million contract extension. Should Favors reach playing time and performance incentives, the deal could go "well over" the $50 million mark.

The deal has not yet been signed, but that is seen as a mere formality at this point. No announcement has been made by the team or Favors' camp at this time.

Utah had until the NBA-imposed Oct. 31 deadline to sign Favors to an extension or risk allowing him to walk into restricted free agency next summer. Though it was expected the Jazz would make a substantial offer to the 22-year-old forward, risking an annual salary of more than $12 million is a big leap for a player with such limited experience.

cheaper and better than Bargs. I like. If he earns the incentives, so be it. Best for both sides.

cheaper than bargnani?

Basically the same. But 12mil/yr for a player with 44 starts in his 3yr career? They could have likely signed him for 8-9mil/yr imo.

Favors is young... full of promise... and actually plays like a REAL big.

Don't see a problem with giving him $10-11M/yr given what he's shown so far.

There is no need to pay a player who's never been a full time starter 12mil/yr (or even 10-11). I would love to have heard these negotiations.

Of course, he was playing behind better more established players. And he's only 22. Still, no matter the reasons he hasn't earned this kind of deal imo.

He hasn't earned it. Payed on potential. AKA bad deal at first since their is plenty of risk taken. Plenty of teams do that though, some players play up to it. Risk is part of basketball since ever? Utah believes that he will live up to that contract, he certainly showed that he can and has the potential to do so.
It can go an Amir Johnson route where everyone was cray at first, but now no one says shit.
Or can go the Rudy Gay route where everyone was crazy since ever about it.

Harden wasn't a full time starter in OKC... and HOU gave him the max. I don't think they regret it either.

Only way it's a bad contract is if Favors turns out to be a bust.... and I highly doubt that's going to be the case.

12.5 mill a year for Derrick Favors? Good lord the Jazz don't want to improve.
A pre-emptive tank contract

On way? So if he isn't a complete bust that means he'll automatically be worth it? He may end up being worth it but they shouldn't have had to pay that much.

Seems high. Yes he's got good solid per-48 numbers (including > 6.0 fouls per game), but he's also only started 21 games for the Jazz over 3 seasons.

It's definitely a Demar Derozan-esque "grow into his contract" signing based on Favors' youth (only 22 years old still) and potential.

I don't like the idea of giving that kind of money to a guy who hasn't played more than 23 mins per game, though.

The big worry is that Enes Kanter may be better than Favors; at least they've got Kanter on a rookie deal for the current season and the next two.

Who are we to decide whether Favors is worth it? Jazz personnel work with him on a daily basis and you hear nothing but good things about the kid. He just hasn't really had a chance to show it. The Jazz had to make a commitment since they lost 2 allstar level PF's in 1 summer. Kanter is anything but a sure bet.

The Jazz are not known for frivolous spending so I'm sure they know what they're doing... Only mistake that comes to mind is signing Greg Ostertag to a bloated contract.

One thing is certain: The Jazz are going to suck hard...

His production in limited minutes was off the charts last year, and when he got 30+ MPG he was averaging a double double with nearly 3 blocks. A lot of you are going to be eating your words after this season. He's like mini Dwight on the defensive end, and if he puts up 10+ points on good efficiency(he averaged 9 ppg on good efficiency last year), he'll be well worth the contract. You cant find many game changers on the defensive end that are still competent on offence. He'll be worth every cent.

He's averaging 7,3 ppg, 11,3 rpg and 2,25 bpg in only 24,8 mpg in the preseason.
