i expect better from simmons. my achy breaky heart goes out to those players who are mentioned in trades. i guess no one should show up to the Raptors camp since no one is untouchable. what a bunch of douches. what have the hornets done to paul to make him not show up? they're trying to meet the request of his demands! why couldn't people like him have brandon roy's knees?

They're still one of the biggest teams in the league (size-wise) and they boast 2 (perhaps 3) all-stars and arguably the best player in the game.

Complaining because the Lakers don't get to stack the deck AGAIN and skip all the rebuilding pains isn't going to fetch any sympathy from anyone.

That being said, Odom not reporting to camp is ridiculous. He's 32 years old, has spent YEARS in LA and has already won a title. WTF? It's a business! Didn't he see how Shaq was passed around like a $2 hooker late in his career? Stop whining. Jeez.

When you think about it, for as much as some of us hate the Lakers D12 and CP3 going to LA could actually be very, very good for the league.

People bitched and moaned about the Heat "superfriends" but you have to realize 2 things....

1) The Heat didn't win the title in the end.

2) The Heat generated a TON of interest in the NBA and probably drew in more casual fans than it had since MJ left CHI.

TBH, this really isn't anything new. In the 80s it was The Celtics vs. The Lakers and people revelled in those "glory years" even though they knew that more often than not those 2 teams were going to meet for the title at the end.

I can't help but wonder why people are so pissed off NOW when nothing's really changed in the last 30 years?

The Hornets, Lakers and Rockets have resumed talks in search of a way to complete their three-way trade for Chris Paul, according to sources.

"All three teams are engaged," one source says. "Not sure if it will work."

On Thursday, the Lakers agreed to acquire Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Houston would acquire for Gasol while sending Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick. The Hornets would receive Odom, along with Martin, Scola, Dragic and the first round pick.

The NBPA has informed the NBA that they need to find a suitable trade for Chris Paul by Monday, according to sources.

If a deal is not reached, the union will pursue other options including litigation.

But the NBA killed the deal later in the evening.

Wow... I wonder if any other teams are trying to put together packages now?

If I were NYK I'd honestly deal 'Melo for CP3 lol....

Amare + Chandler + Paul = pretty good core.

wait, who the hell are they to make such demands. this is stupid.

the perfect scenario for NOHO is to let Paul expire and use the amnesty on okafor, that way they'll be a billion dollars under the cap and not going to be stuck paying odom, scola and martin ten million a piece. if they're looking to sell, that's what they should do.

the nbapa can't hold the nba hostage when he's under contract to play for their team.

Owners agreed that all teams have to pay a minimum of 85% of the Salary Cap.

In order to sell a business you need to make it viable with viable assets, sometimes assets have longer contracts, maybe not the best but not a scenario where the return of the contract is less than the value - and I don't believe the Paul trade falls into that. As a buyer I wouldnt have touched the Hornets with where they were heading player wise and no assets to work with for trades, no commodities - especially when Paul left. As a buyer I certainly would find Paul, Odom, Scola, Matin, Dragic and a 1st round pick for Paul, plus NO own pick a helluva lot MORE enticing and attractive than where NO was heading. And as an added note, from a 'fair competition' in business stand point, what the owners have just done should have not been allowed - that's like Toyota, Kia, Honda, Nissan as an Eastern automotive group joining together and making decisions for Ford - of course they are going to make the best decisions possible to benefit Ford right?
I think obviously e.g. Cuban doesn't care about the money thing as much as screwing the Lakers. But it's much easier to veto and look reasonable if you can say:
"look at what happened to Hawks. That deal fell through because: 1. It's a money losing team. 2. It's a mediocre team with no box office attractions, no stars and no young prodigees, so it's not likely to get profitable soon. 3. They have huge money commitments. 4. Because of all of this, we had to ask Alex Meruelo and any other prospective buyers to show us a cash deposit to cover team's losses in the foreseeable future NEXT TO paying for the team. It makes it much harder to find a buyer. There are good potential owners who can find find the cash / take a loan to buy a team; but there are obvious deal breakers when trying to sell a money losing team with huge contracts, as shown by the Hawks."
And on top of that, he could say:
"Hey, I'm the one who'll have to pay those contracts UNTIL we find the buyer, which may now take even longer. You'll have more expenses, you'll lose your main attraction and money maker for this year, it will take longer to sell the team.. and I'm the one paying the bills? No fkin way. "

That's a valid financial argument that all owners can get behind, even if it's less important for some than screwing the Lakers or showing CP3 his place.

It's true that what the owners have done should not have been allowed, but that doesn't begin with this scenario. They should not be owning the Hornets. That never should have happened. And if it was the only acceptable option at the time, then everything possible should have been done to end the situation by fining new ownership, or at least considering contraction.

The ownership situation is really worrisome to me. You've got this shit, you've got crooks like Prokhorov that never should have been brought into the fold. You've got more and more interest from the financial sector and less from real people that can at least appreciate the sport as well as the business. And you've got too many that are divisive and cantankerous, and wanting to control players to the extent that they make Bryant Gumbel's words ring true (and I would guess that is why the NBAPA has stuck it's nose in there).

It doesn't offer the league a great sense of where it is headed, and between that sense of being rudderless and the pricing in point being out of the range of all but the biggest money, it can't be any easier to figure out who will take over the Hornets, or inevitably the next team or teams that end up in a similar situation.
