The Lakers have pulled out of three-team trade talks that would have netted them Chris Paul.

The NBA rejected an agreed upon trade on Thursday between the Lakers, Hornets and Rockets. The Lakers agreed to acquire Paul in exchange for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. Houston would acquire for Gasol while sending Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick. The Hornets would receive Odom, along with Martin, Scola, Dragic and the first round pick.

Sources say the Lakers will instead trade Odom to the Mavericks for their traded player exception that was acquired from the Knicks for Tyson Chandler.

The Lakers were unable to meet the demands set by the NBA and will not pursue a direct trade with the Hornets, according to a source that spoke with Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports

Honestly... that deal would make more sense.

Kobe + D12 is a pretty deadly combo no matter who you put around them.

Perhaps they think that they may be able to pick up a guy like Billups if he actually hits the waiver wire.

Boston offered Rondo, young players and picks for Paul, and the Hornets said no. Seems fair to me, considering they'll lose him for nothing come July.

The Clippers have emerged as the "early frontrunner" to acquire Chris Paul now that talks with the Lakers have fallen apart.

The Hornets were previously seeking a package built around Eric Gordon from the Clippers. But the Clippers have been reluctant to part with too many assets for Paul due to concerns about a long-term commitment.

As important as Gordon would be to the Hornets, the Clippers also own the unprotected 2012 first round pick of the Wolves.

The Lakers are making another run at Chris Paul, who remains in limbo as the NBA league office has taken over negotiations on behalf of the Hornets.

A trade to send Paul to the Clippers stalled but could also be revived.

The Lakers are looking to build a deal around Pau Gasol but will need a third team to facilitate a trade and help the Hornets receive the young talent and picks that the NBA is insisting upon.
